i think the reason you are failing to realise the vast difference in style is because you can only experience the relaunch through still captures - and the relaunch *has* to be experienced on many levels to be understood. it is impossible to argue that the introduction of the sofa will not influence the style, atmosphere and format of the show - id also say midlands today have gone further than east midlands today - although they're on comfy chairs, its not quite as relaxed as the tvam style sofa.
and its nice to see that central have noted the changes at pebble mill, llewela said at 3.00 "hello and welcome to the midland's favourite news programme, accept NO cheap imitations" - its fab to see a little on screen rivalry and im sure it will be taken in the spirit it was meant!
oh and llewela was also presenting lifeline (from the far superior birmingham CSO set), wonder what's happened to that awful marie woman.

So, not to say it doesn't look nice, but I think it's time for some people to be grounded for moment and realise that this is not a revolution in broadcasting, it's a sofa. And if a sofa encapsulates the energy and enthusiasm in the region at the moment, what a dull place it must be to live !!!

As tvm has said - this will signal a change in the way MT is presented - we saw a massive change to Central's output when they moved to the sofa-desk look...but then lost the plot. I really think this is what Midlands Today are trying to do - almost emulate the success of the Central 2001 look but in their own way.
To be honest, Central News is always trying to be a *hard news* programme with it's semi-serious themes and dramatic top stories, and the sofa at 6:00 seems to contradict their editorial policy these days.
Whereas Midlands Today has no shame, it knows it is a regional magazine - it is not self important region that fills 30 minutes with "hard" news stories (almost impossible to do on a regional news programme!!) - if there are stories worth covering, Midlands Today are there covering them...and often a lot more indepth that Central who try to obtain the glitzy *how does it look on TV?* side of a story. The motorshow last year was an excellent example of that, whilst Bob was posing with women and Jo was touching cars - MT had Mark Foster at the motorshow covering the business side of things and interviewed chairmans of car companies.
It may sound mad - but Midlands Today does the news better, but they realise it doesn't have to occupy the full 30 minutes, and are certainly not afraid to show their more cliched old style regional news style - and because of that I think the sofa suits the programme extremely well. The fact that all the bulletins I have watched today, didn't look out of place with the sofa at all - even next to the boat drowning story which has made the national news. The right mix, the right people and now the right set. I really think Midlands Today is on to a winner.

Has Kay's Traffic Information System been altered in any way or is it already perfect?
I thought this would be more along the lines of the "News Cafe" style adopted by Oxford (or somewhere down there). I could never imagine Scotland doing this. They used the big screen and did a lot of standing up suring the election but that made the show interesting so it had to go.

I haven't watched any yet but I'll pop in at 6.30 to see what all the fuss is about! I've always been more into Central News but the BBC seem to be getting their act together, finally. We shall see soon, I'm sure. But it's not going to set the trend... nobody in their right mind will present their national news show on a sofa.

I can't really make up my mind! Good to see more china red and creme I do like this look across the whole of the regions. I love the new look and with Kay introducing it was brilliant. I must say how pleased I was to be finally welcomed by Kay. The thing I am not best pleased about is there is NO desk apart from the coffee table. Don't get me wrong I love the 8 seater sofa but I think they still need a desk and then at move to the "soft set" where the sofa could be. I bit like Look North. I thought Sue might of returned to introduce this NEW LOOK MIDLANDS TODAY with Nick like she did last time!
Can anyone answer me this why do they change the view on the window? Also Shef still on the weather, am I right in thinking she is leaving MT?
Overall I do like it! I have recorded all the bulletins today and I am goign to record the main and late editions of Midlands Today.

i think kays system has remained unaltered - i don't think we could cope with a new look midlands today AND a new system - that would be too much!
the local radio frequencies (last line on the system) used to be red, but was black this morning - although apparently they were red in later updates but i was exhausted, so went back to bed after the first few.
as to the news cafe, thank god they didn't go down that route! i think sofa news is the way to go.
and for those who DID NOT rise to see kay's big debut this morning, firstly ... shame on you... and secondly - because a bit like jesus kay will forgive people - here are edited video highlights ...
Midlands Breakfast with Kay, the relaunch best bits
Midlands Today Lunchtime with Kay - see kay close the show and shefali walk and join her on the sofa
as kay says, tonight MAJOR PEBBLE MILL CELEB christopher timothy (from doctors and all creatures great and small) will be giving his nomination for greatest midlander - so be there or be square!
