On a side note about studios, I see Riverside TV have abandoned the opening of their Studio 1, which was supposed to be in "late 2018", and now it just says opening in 2019.

That gives you "hope" for studio space in central London doesn't it? I wonder what is delaying the opening of this much needed studio?

Do you know that there is actually a shortfall of studio space? Are there productions that can't get space?

ITV relying on the BBC to provide studios for their national daytime shows does suggest a lack of studio space. Sorry for being flippant. Yes, there is. It is not just the lack of space, many productions want to be located in London, but are now having to move out to Elstree, Pinewood, Maidstone etc.

Have I Got News For You enjoyed being in The London Studios, their location was perfect for audiences and guests, but now they are 15 miles away in Stage 8 at Elstree. Nice stage, good size, but not in central London, and harder for audiences to get to, to see the shows being recorded.

It is not just about studio shortfall, it is about location too. Also, there are still shows which required a studio audience, and work well at key London studios, which are now gone.

Absolutely. I went to see a recording of Celebrity Pointless at the beginning of November 2017 in TC3. I was talking to one of the ladies who keeps on eye on the audience outside, she'd asked me if I had been before, I said no, first time, but had been to see the Celebrity Chase at TLS on many occasions with an audience of around 600. She said then that they had trouble getting an audience out to Elstree and some shows they had only 20 people for a recording but since moving back to TC3 they now had over 100 each time but she added, ITV are moving in to TC3 (and TC2) which meant that Pointless would be relocating again out to Elstree which the production team were not happy about because it would mean fewer audience members. This was the one nice thing about it being in Central London/West London; we parked at Newbury Park then took the Underground in and you could go up, do some shopping, have lunch and then go the recording before coming back home.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but haven't you in the past bemoaned the fact that studios outside of London have closed?

I suspect the main reason the team behind Pointless don't like Elstree is because their production office is a 10 minute walk from TV Centre

The London Studios were very convenient for myself (as I expect it was for many people) and I actually went to see quite a few recordings there (far more than any of the other studios), and it was quite common for people to be turned away (including myself on one occasion).

I live in Hampshire, and can get a direct train to Waterloo in just over an hour, and the studios were a 5 minute walk from the station.

Yep, they were probably the best located of the big TV studios, anything in central London will be as the transport links are primarily radial - they all go into the centre.

The same for commuting, I went from working at White City to working in the West End and suddenly I had the whole of London a single journey away rather than going in and back out

The Hong Kong developer working on Greenwich Peninsula wants to build film studios there, although that may well be a decade off yet.

Apart from dreaming about owning and reopening the London studios my mate said something interesting. ITV wanted to buy endmol shine not so long ago. If this deal go through then ITV could move into the endmol shine offices or open a much larger hq somewhere for both company's.

ITV have ruled out bidding for Endemol Shine. I think we'll see the company become far more cautious under Carolyn McCall.

Selling that prime real estate, instead of acting as a landlord - could be seen as filling the coffers to bolster the company.

Before WWII there were plans well underway to extend the Northern Line to Elstree (in fact I believe the lines are still half built underground) with the intention of serving new housing estates planned for the area. However building work stopped during the war and the Attlee government of 1945 introduced legislation which limited the expansion of urban areas into rural towns and so the station was scrapped.

All humorously explained here, as well:
