The new set is being built in Studio 2 (in the basement).

Am I right in thinking that this 'new set' is VR, so that they can have a seamless move from N&S to GIR without the viewers noticing?

No, it's going to be a real set this time.

Just a VR host then. Wink

Indeed with no news presenter in the UK seemingly capable of doing a 5 day week it's an option worth considering. Heck, perhaps they already do but it's done so well we haven't noticed.

Just to jog everyone's memory… a trip down memory lane

1997: Arguably the best 5 News look. Nice big newsroom set, colourful, LOTS of monitors. Varied presentation style with many different places to present from. Unarguably best theme tune.

2000: Still colourful but a much brighter, whiter set. No more newsroom. Huge clock in the background for some reason. Looks cleaner but perhaps lost some of its charm by ditching the newsroom.

2002: To me this set always seemed a lot smaller than what came before or after. Not the most memorable, but had a nice backdrop. Can't imagine that bench was entirely comfortable to sit/lean on. Survived the huge 'five' rebranding in September 2002.

2003: Very very blue. And an orange accent in the form of the sofa/bench thing. I personally loved this era though it was not to everyone's taste. Last set to be used during the first ITN era.

2005: All change. Five News becomes a Sky News production. Have to say, I didn't find this set all that exceptional at the time, but in hindsight it's actually very nice, a warm set that really suited Five News. what let it down was the boring titles and theme tune. I particularly liked the fact that news updates would come from a standing position at the top of the stairs, just a nice bit of variation and making use of something you would only expect to be there to look nice.

2008: Don't really know what to think of this nowadays to be honest, it looks a bit garish and more like a chat show set than a news bulletin. Theme tune was pretty bad too IMO. Bonus points for the logo set in glass (or plastic?)

2011: Last of the Sky News sets. Interesting thing to note about this set is there is no desk/bench/sofa, just a sort of lecturn (or laptop stand really). Despite 5 News always being thought of as the news bulletin where people stand up, all the sets before this at least had something you could sit on (including a desk). Theme tune again not very memorable, though the title sequence did remind some of the titles to Catchphrase

And that brings us up to the virtual sets of 2012 and beyond.

Thanks for this, I'd forgotten about much of those. The last two sets were bloody awful, the last one looks like a Lottery set. Horrible logo as well.

Actually come to think of it it looks suspiciously like the old Health Lottery set.

I know everyone says it when 5 news has a revamp but I would love to see a newsroom in the background.

I'm still confused how the new look is going to work if they are presenting from a temp studio in the interim

Everyone just wants 5 News to go back to how it was when it launched basically.

It just needs kicking into life again - it's been pretty souless for years.

I think you'll be disappointed if you want a newsroom backdrop or the injection of life.

Studio 2 is going to be its permanent home now - there is no interim studio.

There's going to be an interim control room until a permanent one is built and equipped, though.
