Perhaps the 'go live' isn't until 6pm or similar? Or we may have been misinformed about the date.

As far as I'm aware, the Tweet that Rob quoted earlier is from a UTV employee [*]. There was supposed to be two weeks of playout parallel running (Belfast and London), prior to a formal go live for London playout on Monday 17th. That date was also intended to be the launch for on-screen changes. However, it's not inconceivable that Chiswick would start taking the reigns prior to the 17th, if the testing was going well - with Belfast playout still running in the background as a backup (and that may have been the plan all along).

So, perhaps Chiswick will become the live output at some point during the day. Even if it does, there's still a possibility that Belfast playout will re-appear during the week.

EDIT: [*] - my mistake - he may have been a UTV employee at one point but now works for the BBC in England.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the new political programme "View from Stormont" starts next Monday night at 10.45pm.

Looks to me as if ads are being played out from Belfast, with other presentation elements from London if the picture quality is anything to go by.

Was UTV's playout that bad? Most ads are not filmed in HD as far as I'm aware, can it not be that they are in SD?

Virtually all ads and presentation elements are filmed in HD. However, that doesn't mean that they will be played out in HD... Depending on the channel. And even if they are made and played in HD, that doesn't mean that there won't be noticeable differences in picture quality depending on which playout centre is transmitting them. It's quite likely that UTV playout and ITV playout are using different codecs on their files.

Actually it doesn't seem consistent. I get the impression they're chopping and changing at various points. Some of the output today has certainly been in full HD, however.

That's interesting in itself. Does it mean that ITV are switching in UTV playout in places, or the other way around? And why would they be doing things that way?

UTV had always requested SD for advert delivery for some reason... even up to April this year someone I know was amazed at the request.

Its pretty clear to me, unlike STV who does care about its TV operations, UTV didn't.

It seems to me that STV is a considerably larger company than UTV, and has more money to spend.

Under the circumstances, different priorities need to be decided.

In fact, I'd argue that STV doesn't, and never did, care about its presentation output. It was always, after YTV, the most staid and boring presentation on the network.

When? back in the 1980s? Granada was dire, Border was dire.

Border was small.

Granada I'll grant you actually. They were worse than YTV actually during the early 1980s -- only the presence of some good announcers saved them.
