I mocked up very quickly how the same text would look over two lines. While I'm biased, I think it looks much better and is much easier to read than when squashed on one line.

Haha. Even on comedy TV show Veep, their fake news graphics use a neater two-line recreation for CNN:

It does look better on two lines, but they wouldn't be able to do that sweet animation when it moves up.

I'm not liking the new font. Looks poor.

Indeed, and given they use so many studio-based contributors, they clearly need those name astons a lot. They do work well.

As fast as they decided to adopt CNN Sans, It seems they may also have decided to drop it, at least for CNN International, CNN Domestic seems to be sticking with CNN Sans. Although I feel CNN Sans looks too generic a font for it to remotely suggest or represent the CNN brand, it's a lot more legible for long headlines.

Sorry for the bad quality pics, took it directly off my tv set.

CNNI routinely lags behind CNN Domestic by a few weeks when it comes to lower third updates, so I would imagine CNNI would change fairly soon.

I find the font change baffling. But then I still don't understand why the BBC News has (twice) replaced Gill Sans with Helvetica, and why Bloomberg has likewise shifted from Avenir to Helvetica for its graphics. I simply don't see how Helvetica (or its variants) is materially easier to read. It's not like we're talking about replacing the 2012 London Olympics font.

I thought Richard Quest's reference to licensing in the clip was interesting, something about CNN Sans able to be used by all CNN staff in all global markets online, on TV and in print in everywhere.

I find it baffling too.

CNN Sans looks like a poor man's copy of Helvetica. If you're going for a custom corporate font, at least make it look a little upmarket and at very least unique.

Helvetica would look better for CNN.

For those keeping score, as of today, CNNI has switched to CNN Sans. It looks like some of the locator graphics are still in Gotham though.

Looking at these again, CNN and MSNBC basically have almost the same lower third design now.

According to C21, CNN is partnering with a local broadcaster to launch Burma's first 24hour news channel. Too bad it wont be called CNN Myanmar...its called ChannelOne.
