Bizarrely UTV seem to have introduced some new idents today! I noticed a new scene before UTV Live and there's just been another before ITV News, not sure if there have been any others earlier in the day.

Strange considering there's supposedly a new look coming very soon. Rolling Eyes

Didn't something similar happen with Channel TV? In its dying days of autonomy, they sent a film crew out across the islands for a new set of idents that can't have been in use for very long prior to the 2013 ITV rebrand.

Perhaps a last hurrah of sorts?

Wasn't it announced a while ago that new idents were being filmed around NI, and that they'd also be seen by viewers in the rest of the ITV plc area?

Presumably idents in the "ITV-esque" style* will have been filmed, and they will be mixed in with the existing set, meaning that the same overall set of ident films are used in both NI and the pre-existing ITV plc area (the only difference being the respective "itv" and "U(tv)" logos slapped on top of the footage).

(*Style? What style? Just literally footage of any old random crap, more like! Rolling Eyes )

Perhaps whilst the crew were out-and-about filming for the above, they also took the opportunity to point the camera at some nice bits of scenery to add some new "last hurrah" idents to the out-going set?

EDIT: Very few of the current ITV ones seems to have much of a sense of location (e.g. the "glass elevator ascent" one, where you can see the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral). Most are just filmed in e.g. "someone's back garden" etc, and could've been filmed anywhere in Britain for all that you can tell.

Perhaps U(tv) will initially mostly/entirely use ones that are more apparently NI-centric (and therefore will have filmed quite a lot of them), and will use few/none of the ones from the existing ITV set, but then gradually shifting to a more even mixture over time? Conversely, perhaps only a few of the many that U(tv) will have recently filmed will be seen by viewers elsewhere in the UK?

If that prediction is at all correct, then perhaps the exact same background footage that is appearing in these "last hurrah old style" idents will simply have the old logo replaced with the new one on rebrand day?

Good for them I say! I was in Belfast the other day and went to have a nosey at UTV Towers... all the UTV logos still present thankfully.

Julian's mobile phone was ringing during the end credits of Emmerdale tonight... Rather put him off his voice over.

I would assume that they wouldn't want to mix this look with a new look when it comes in, so it could be a last hurrah or it could be ITV tidying up the current look for now before they get to fully make it look how they want it. I'm reminded of when Scottish took over Grampian and introduced a temporary Grampian ident, finally replacing the 1989 ITV ident they'd worn into the ground just as it was fully retired. Scottish then introduced its generic look not too long afterwards.

When the new look comes in I'd be amazed if they did anything other than ITV Northern Ireland, maybe throughout the day in recorded announcements to start with, with localised idents which still look quite generic getting a good run out. That would allow ITV to do its piece about still reflecting Northern Ireland life, still having a commitment to the local patch and simply tidying up the brand before jettisoning it all as soon as they know there won't be a political backlash. That "temporary" Grampian ident was introduced because the 1989 ITV logo was scrapped. They dropped it the same day the new 1998 logo debuted, that ident lasted over a year.

The strange thing was there was already another ident in use by early 98, just Grampian logo on a black screen.

We're often critical of ITV Wales, but I honestly don't think that things are too bad there regional programming wise at the moment (although this may not have always been the case). Whilst over the Summer there is next to no regional programming outside of the news, for a large part of the year now there is a decent commitment to local programming in peak time. Coast and Country, Wales this Week and Sharp End are all series that have been running for at least a little while now, and next week things seem to be ramping up again, with a seemingly one off 'The Fantastic Mr Dahl' on Monday at 8pm, whilst new series 'Crime Files' (looking at crime stories from Wales), starts Tuesday at 9pm - to show these shows they're even shifting the first episode of a new series from Monday at 8pm to Tuesday at 9:30pm in Wales.

Saying that, are ITV careful to make sure promos for shows that are being shifted in Wales don't go out with the wrong times there? I can't imagine they're that bothered but I'd be happy to be proved wrong!

That has to be the first peak time local series outside the usual slots versus EastEnders for quite some time.

This might not be new news at all... If you watch any of the UTV Live news videos it is branded itv news and ends with the itv news titles...... ho hum.

The leaves, they are beginning to fall.........

I think it's no secret that UTV Live is to be integrated fully into ITV News Group.
