Interestingly UTV HD has gone on 103 on SKY first time a PSB has done this.

Yes, common sense at last, I was under the impression that PSB broadcasters are not permitted to
do that because due to arcane thinking by Ofcom and DCMS, HD services cannot have prominence over SD
simulcasts on EPGs. Either that's not true, or UTV have told Ofcom to 'stick it', either way, good on them !

No Julian on Christmas Day this year according to the Sunday Life:

While we have our feet up on Christmas Day, UTV's GILLIAN PORTER will be hard at work.

"This is the first time I have presented the continuity on Christmas Day in almost 11 years, but I'll be in good company at work and I'm secretly looking forward to watching the Christmas edition of Downton Abbey in peace and quiet," she said.

It is eleven years indeed since Gilly last did Christmas Day continuity. She also did Christmas night 2001 and even did an in-vision link with her then newborn daughter! Hope she'll be looking fabulous this year.

Will Jules still be in on Christmas Eve to do the Santa Flashes though?

Julian is indeed on duty tonight, resplendent in tuxedo and promising Santa Flashes later this evening.

Hi all,

It's been a few years since I posted in this forum (maybe 8? years!) I was back home in N.Ireland for a couple of weeks over Christmas and my days were filled watching the telly, including countless re-runs of The Jeremy Kyle Show.

Some of the issues I have with UTV are the following:

1. What is UTV's demographic?

There's a real difference (I feel) between BBC NI and UTV in terms of their overall programming, look & feel. How often do UTV invest any of their profits back into original programming, apart from making the same old thing, aimed at the same demographic - i.e. Countryside, Heritage, Tractors, Farming etc. I must have counted the 'Rare Breed' ad trailed over 100 times over Xmas. Trailing an ad so much, you would have thought they would cut a few different ones, but it was the same old thing, over and over again. Additionally, I was home in November and caught the start of the 'magazine show.' My god, it was dire. It looked to have been shot on a £1 budget. Also, what type of cameras do UTV shoot on? It may have be my screen but everything seemed dull on-screen.

2. UTV Drive... UTV Jobs.. U105...

I think this is my biggest pet hate. Those dreadful adverts that are trailed during every single commercial. They're shocking. I believe UTV should be primarily focusing on its broadcasting efforts, instead of all their other businesses, including Property Pal. If not, spend some cash on producing decent ads!!

3. In-House

Is the problem here that everything is being produced in-house? Is fresh, new talent & ideas being restricted by only having in-house staff producing EVERYTHING! Everything is the same, time and time again, including the look and feel of those UTV ads above! Get some freelances in!

4. Idents

I'm really sorry If I'm coming across as a negative mary but I don't like them. Yes, they have been fine over the last 10 years, but come on, lets see something new! Also, please, please, please update the logo, it's so dated!!

So that's my beef with UTV. As a 26 year old (who works in the broadcasting industry in London) I don't feel I can connect with UTV in terms of its presentation & programming. It bores me.

I'd suggest that, as a 26-year-old who works in the broadcasting industry in London, you're definitely not UTV's typical target audience.

There is a real difference in the feel of BBC NI and UTV, and there should be. One has a guaranteed source of income, and the other is a commercial business that exists to make money. Thus it isn't going to spend a huge amount of cash on regional programming that will not guarantee it any additional profits and will probably run at a loss - especially if they 'get some freelances in' - and it is going to promote all its spin-off businesses that actually do make it some money.

I understand the frustration - I'm an anorak myself - but frankly changing a few idents and creating a new, super-exciting regional show is not going to make UTV money.

Very true. Changing a few idents and creating a new, super-exciting regional show may not make them any money but it's all about protecting your brand & investing in it for the future, come 20-years will they still be doing what they're doing now? Who knows. I think times are changing, and UTV are not adapting to that change.

In 20 years there is a good chance it will be owned by ITV Plc, be branded ITV, and have minimal regional non-news programming. Its likely

People were saying that ten years ago, and it hasn't happened. Consolidation of the ITV network is more or less finished, unless ITV plc can get hold of either STV or UTV on the cheap. ITV plc sold their shares in STV quite recently, something they wouldn't have done if they were on the brink of a takeover attempt. Ironically enough UTV has been protected because it is so unique, it has done a good job of serving its local audience in NI which is possibly the most difficult to serve. Certainly you won't be seeing UTV Live presented mainly from a couch anytime soon, regional news in Northern Ireland is still too serious for that.
