Bit of a roadblock from Sky for Soccer Saturday:

Quote:
In addition to its regular broadcast on Sky Sports News HQ and Sky Sports 1, Soccer Saturday on August 13 will be shown from 3pm on Sky 1, Pick, skysports.com and - for the first time - streamed on Sky Sports' Facebook and YouTube pages.

Perhaps a bit of a reaction to a certain other programme which launches tomorrow?

So this will be the first time Soccer Saturday will be on Freeview (via Pick) since SSN left the platform.

Not quite, it was shown on Pick on the opening day of the Premier League back in 2013, and I think maybe in 2011 when Sky3 had a 'Weekend Pass', worth noting Pick are only showing Soccer Saturday from 3pm though.

Why does the Premiere League start up while the Olympics are underway? Fortunately they only lost six athletes to the game. Here in the US the leagues generally avoid scheduling big games against each other.

The live rights are held by pay TV subscriptions who have very limited live content during the games so they really do need the football. The audience doesn't necessarily overlap that significantly.

Re: Premier League matches - surprised they've been announced so far into the future considering what happened last year.

Especially without GB competing in Olympic football.

Well, indeed, because Olympic football is an absolutely minor event in the grand scheme of things. As mentioned, virtually no Premier League players are involved due to the contrived format, and most football fans have no real interest in Olympic football, I certainly don't.

As also suggested, there simply isn't the time for the season to begin any later either. I do know that in 2000, Serie A didn't start until after the Olympics and so didn't get underway until October, and carried on until mid-June, but it's pretty much unworkable the rest of the time. There's plenty of other sport going on during the Games, England are still playing test matches and there are Grand Prix and so on. People can happily watch both. The Premier League also runs at the same time as many other sporting events every year, like the Ryder Cup.

Rights news...
Channel 4 will show the BDO World Darts championships, after the BBC threw the towel in at the of this years competition.

Although it is worth pointing out that the Beeb are still covering darts, but from the PDC, which is a much higher standard. Quality rather than quantity. I've said this before here but I haven't got a clue what C4's sporting strategy is or how it fits into their remit. I don't know how Formula One fitted given its appeal to mostly white middle-class men, hardly an underserved audience, and now there's darts. Popular with young BAME audiences, is it?

Does the advertising revenue from popular sports like racing, F1, darts pay for the shows for BAME audiences though?

I don't think C4 have a clue what their sports strategy is either other than throw most of it out in the middle of the night or at 7am on a Sunday.

I read shortly after (may have been the ultra reliable sportontv blog) the C4 deal with Bernie/FOM was announced, was all down to UK team based sponsorship. Williams and McLaren had sold blank space on their cars to plaster logos on it, because of the exposure it would bring by having 10 live races on the BBC and highlights of other races to the end of the of the 2018 season.

BBC ended the rights early due to the squeeze on the sports budget, and the teams petrified of having to hand back in penalty fees to the sponsors because of the loss of FTA coverage, went to Bernie to get some sort of deal until the end of the 2018 season.

C4 it seems was the only broadcaster of the three main commercial channels that showed any interest in picking up the former BBC junior rights to Sky coverage of the sport.
