Do the US networks often force the hands of their counterparts to so heavily credit them in the run-up to a big exclusive, or has this interview been the exception? On TV, it's been very strange to see straps on-screen throughout clips shown on the BBC etc today crediting the production companies and also specifically that the interview would be on ITV at 9pm and on ITV Hub. On Radio 1 this morning the newsreaders were even reading the full credit out! The BBC News app sending a push notification basically saying 'whack ITV on, it's starting' was also a bit of a surprise.

You’ve literally summed up what I came here to say. I found the BBC News app notification very baffling.

What authority are the credits governed by, or are they just honoured out of goodwill? What action could realistically happen if the correct credit wasn’t in place.

Presumably as ITV (reportedly) paid so much for it, they wanted the maximum out of it. Wonder if it’s been similar in other territories.

If there's one thing that comes out of this interview though, perhaps it will be that people finally stop referring to ITV Hub as ITV Player...! If Channel 4 had gone for it maybe they could have finally stopped people referring to their streaming service as 4oD, which I still hear people say much more frequently than All4...

Very Happy This amazes me too, how both of those brands seemingly haven’t died after about 5 years. We must almost be heading into a longer time of the new names than the original ones.

Basically now that corporate relationships are being put into jeopardy as a result of Morgan’s rants, I can’t see him lasting much longer.

It reminds me a little of Top Gear/Clarkson situation where he just kept pushing his luck. Although to be clear, I’m not suggesting Morgan is going to end up punching a producer.

Thankfully due to the pandemic, people in TV studios have to wear Face Shields so Erron is safe!

I don't think Erron would mind if it got the ratings. He seems to have no moral compass.

I hope Im understanding the confusion. This was a very unusual situation because of the huge international interest. (Clearly)
Its very likely that in order to use the video you have to give credit to the producers. For example, if you see film clips shown during a news broadcast you usually see the name of the studio flash in the corner. Likely rights usage was by set by Harpo and CBS that they were to be credited if you wanted to use the footage or audio. Likely if it wasnt done the organization would get sued by the rights holders Harpo. You have thieving broadcaststers around the world that steal programming so its very simple. Remember the situation in Australia where news orgs actually have to watermark their video because other news orgs actually steal it and broadcast it without permission. So Im not whats the mystery or problem.

It a not a typical news story. Its a taped interviewed made by a production company. Not a news organization. So the rights situation was vastly different. You can almost think of a broadcaster playing out a sitcom or drama they dont have the rights to. Its just not done. Harpo likely released sections to other broadcasters with the expressed caveat that the credits are included.

No-one's questioning the need to give credit for the footage - this happens all the time here too. What makes this unusual is the lengthy and precise wording used everywhere that seems to be a condition of use. Usually you would see "Pictures from ITV/CBS/Harpo" or whatever but signposting viewers to another broadcaster's online viewing platform "Interview on ITV Hub" is a bit unusual.

We are in a different age and Streaming is becoming the King these days. Especially in the US. All the major broadcasters are all launching streamers. Even internationally. So expect the unexpected.

Unsurprisingly, as has happened multiple times in the past, both the ITV Hub and STV Player seem to be having problems with people tuning in tonight.

Its times like this you realise many young people don’t know how to watch actual live TV

You don’t have to register to just press button 3 on your remote!

Reminds me of those ads you see for devices that you plug into the back of your TV and allows you to get lots and lots of TV channels for free.

It's an aerial

Indeed, though that said the first thing tellies ask for when you unbox them, and switch them on is to be connected to the Internet!

Dave accepting it'll be a bad night's ratings for them.

Give it few years, and they'll be repeating the interview three or four times a week

Not that different to in newspapers and magazines where interviews are given to promote a certain programme or service. It's not unusual in the sports pages to see an interview with someone and then a credit at the end saying "X was speaking to promote Sky Sports' coverage of Y. Sky Sports will be showing Z hours of coverage...", as a condition of getting the interview.

Similarly the Beeb doing a news alert that it was on ITV now isn't that unusual, it's just another news story and there's no point pretending it doesn't exist. It did mean the Ten O'Clock News was talking about it while it was still going on, but then back in 1995, the famous Diana interview was of course only seen by a handful of people before it was broadcast, so News at Ten and Newsnight had to analyse it while it was still going on, and when they actually knew less than most people.

Browsing through the Harry & Meghan wedding thread, I found this image. I'm guessing the question was something like "what will Meghan have to get used to"?

I think it was worth the money for ITV. Looks like the peak was 12.3m.

2nd most watched programme of the year so far to one of the Boris announcements (although technically that doesn't really count because that was being aired on multiple channels).
