I think the hearts motif could work -- just not the way that they currently use it

and the idea for these 'new' hearts do sound very similar to the current ones -- doesn't look to good so far…

Yeah I know. I sent an email when they first announced it to ITV and got a response from a Fiona Middleton (whoever she is):

*Cough* Quote:

'ITV has decided to rebrand its original channel as ITV1 this summer. The planned date for the introduction of this new name has been decided to co-incide with the launch of ITV Digital. You should see the name ITV1 therefore on your screens from the 11th of July with the completion of the introduction of the rebrand in late August.'

Only got this response two days ago.

I reckon it'll be a gradual change to ITV1 starting from tommorrow. I reckon there will be no new look yet, but it might start being refered to as ITV1 eg: 'Over on ITV2, another chance to see tonight's edition of Coronation Street, but now here on ITV1 the ITV News at Ten.'

I don't know why they just couldn't do it all at once. Launch ITV Digital, and the relaunch/new-look of ITV 1, and the launch of the sports channel. It'd make more sense and be a little more 'attention grabbing' imo.

I think that whatever ITV are planning, it needs to be consistent and have a feel of quality about it - something they've not really done since the 1989 generic look.  The 1999 'Hearts' (designed by English & Pockett, the same agency, as the 1989 look) were much better than the idents that preceded them, but in my view Carlton's variation on the 'Hearts' theme had much more of a quality feel about it than the drab live action mixed with those awful 3D spinning hearts on a blue background, and the awful blue and yellow logo.  The interesting thing about the excellent Carlton idents though, were that they were created by the design agency Lambie Nairn, much loved by the BBC (the BBC's logo, BBC News, all of BBC TV idents etc.).  I think it's about time that FutureBrand English & Pockett (as they are now called) actually came up with a decent and consistent brand for ITV, getting rid of those shocking creations so often seen (particularly in regional idents and presentation of regional programmes (Yorkshire?!)) that is courtesy of incapable in-house design-teams!

Lambie-Nairn really do excellent work. They are a very good design company, the best I've seen I think.

BTW, does anyone know if Carlton is going to use these new ITV 1 idents? (I doubt it) But they're going to have to make some changes.

And does anyone know if ITV 1 will carry a DOG?

So I take it that this is the rather foul-looking ITV Digital logo, then?!

Looks lovely, doesn't it?! I'm sure it'll really help bump-up those flagging subscription numbers! Smile

I was very pleased to receive in the mail today a letter from ITV Digital.

It has a nice, fold it yourself display to tell you what to do on 'ITV Digital Day' (which is tomorrow of course!)

It also had an 'upgrade your box' letter for Wednesday in which I will need to restore my channels.

Also included was a 'new' channel line-up sheet which is exactly the same as the old one but has ITV branding over all the OnDigital channels. There are going to be 3 ITV sports channels though. UK Style and UK Horizons also now get their own channel instead of operating a split service.

Finally, the best bit of all was the small A5 sheet entitled. 'Update your set top box to get the latest channels' which consisted of two shiny stickers that I was told to stick over the OnDigital logo's on the remote and STB. Fantastic! Very Happy

I'm not being nasty - I have to tell people that now, as they don't get my sarcasm.

Can I just say that, whilst you all slag off English & Pockett for the ITV idents, remember that they also created the fantastic trailers for ITV and it is they who are working on the new ones as well.

I hope it is tomorrow for the renaming of ITV, but I seriously doubt that there'll be a big change. You never know though...
