It was a common thing with news archives going to the successor companies. Though I don't think Westcountry got TSW's, and Fremantle still have Thames's too (and are regularly YouTubing footage from it).

No Westcountry didn't acquire the news archives of either TSW or Westward, it went to a group down in Plymouth along with I believe some BBC South West programmes as well.

TVS and Southern I think were with Meridian, not sure if that is now all at ITV Yorkshire. The other TVS programmes are with Disney but most of the paperwork is missing, that got "lost" somewhere between TVS and The Family Channel.

TSW made things incredibly difficult for Westcountry during 1992 and therefore it's not all surprising that the archive didn't cross over.

ATV's news archive went to Central too, worth remembering that their programme archive didn't, and only came under common ownership when Carlton bought it in 1999.

Correct. In fact Westcountry didn't get either the TSW or Westward archives.

That now lives here www.swfta.co.uk

There was a TVS 'The Saturday Match' with Fred Dinage in there somewhere too.

Look what you've done now. Wink

I wonder if the right to show the archive programmes is conferred along with the rights for the competition in question?

I've been spotting the occasional LWT frontcap for a while now. There's also some great retro Channel 9 pres on the archive Aussie cricket that's getting a lot of airtime at the moment.

Whilst it varies, that certainly seems to be the case with a lot of sports and competitions - the Olympics, FIFA / UEFA tournaments and Formula 1 (1981 onwards) are some examples.

However here it wouldn't be the case here given the competition in question is the Football League- rights currently held by Sky and Quest / Discovery. 'Classic' editions of 'Match of the Day' were on UK Gold back in the 1990s, ESPN a few years ago and we've had 'The Big Match' on ITV and now BT Sport, when none of those channels held Football League rights.

In terms of Football League coverage it appears that pre-1992 footage is owned by the broadcasters, the same seems to apply to FA Cup and England games (outside of major tournament finals) of the same era given that have been editions of the 'Big Match' repeated that focused on the FA Cup. From 1992 onwards (especially with the Premier League) things become much more restricted.

A first outing on UK TV this season for the European Challenge Cup tomorrow evening on BT Sport, with ASM Clermont v Northampton the fixture covered. A few years ago that would have been a Heineken Cup pick of the weekend, but time change I guess.

We have our fingers crossed that it won't be interlaced this time.
