One other thing to remember is that UHD coverage may still be using fewer cameras than HD coverage - so may not be suitable as a source for HD broadcasts yet.

Yes, that was certainly the case at the OB I was at.

It's exactly like the events in the early to mid 00s, that were covered in SD for the core feeds, and also in HD by far fewer cameras. The 2002 World Cup springs to mind ?

I think that was the case with the 2004 Olympics- I remember people complaining that the BBC's coverage was in 4:3 even though there was a HD feed, but there were fewer HD cameras and IIRC not all the events were covered either

In 2004, basically no events were covered in HD. There were some HD highlights made available at the IBC but that was about it. Everything was available in 16:9 though - the first Olympics where that was the case. There was still significant amounts of analogue PAL around though.

I remember tuning into Ski Sunday several years ago and being surprised that it was still 4:3.

BT Sport have picked up secondary rights to some UEFA Youth League matches, the primary rights which were with Eurosport in 2014-5 are now held centrally with UEFA Media, who are showing upto four matches each matchday via their YouTube channel.

The first match under this new agreement is on air currently. M. Tel Aviv v Chelsea, from Netanya.

Thanks for the pictures above, Mr Cornwall. I'm surprised by the UHD angle, as I thought the point was for the UHD picture to be further away to get more of the pitch in to utilise the additional resolution? I
Not necessarily further away, but I think the theory is that you can sit on a fairly wide camera 1 shot for longer, rather than needing to cut to close-ups more often.

Some cameras are shared between the HD and UHD OBs - I think the 16-yard line cameras, for example. Sharing cameras between trucks does add a few complications though - whose tally light does it display; which return vision do you get; and which director do you listen to?

Because the shots (and also the replays) differ between the two productions, it also means that there's separate commentary. On a Saturday, the UHD channel will go on air with upconverted HD match presentation with Jake Humphrey at 1200, and the UHD programme will go on air at 1240ish, usually with Paul Dempsey commentating. He also narrates the half-time highlights, but doesn't appear in vision.

There have been a few matches where the UHD truck has done the same programme for the UHD channel, and downconverted for one of the HD channels; they've all been fairly low-profile so far.

And then when it went 16:9 earlier this decade, the graphics were 16:9 and not 4:3 safe, which
made for comedy viewing in the last remaining analogue regions !

I wonder if graphics on UHD broadcasts are still 4:3 or 14:9 safe or will they finally move to proper 16:9 graphics. Obviously only of course when the UHD broadcast isn't being downscaled for the HD/SD channel and will be using the same graphics. As much as I'd like to see all broadcasters move to 16:9 graphics, we have to think of the few who still haven't moved with the times.... !

AFAIK, all of BT Sport's graphics have been 16:9 title safe from the beginning.

I understand tests are in progress to make the, mostly disliked, but thankfully much less used now, 'L' presentation style optional on BT Sport Europe.

BT Sport Europe has now got a graphics free option via BTSX6. Accessable directly via BTTV EPG or red button on Sky.

What do you mean by 'l' presentation style?

This SSN style presentation .... The 'L' being the graphic elements,
which have appeared on almost all re-runs since 1st Aug 2015.
