Surely BBC2 Scotland won't disappear? Scottish political party conference coverage on daytime BBC1 Scotland anyone? Wouldn't the most likely scenario be that BBC2 Scotland pre 1900 continues as at present, and post 1900 it will follow the England schedule apart from very exceptional circumstances?

As for BBC1 Scotland, aren't some non-news Scottish programmes still likely to air - and not just in daytime or the Inside Out slot? The new BBC Scotland will have two issues - likely a lower reach than BBC1 Scotland and a fixed 9pm newshour on weekdays that could not easily be moved later as it would clash with the BBC News at 10. So trying to air midweek Scottish football matches for example probably wouldn't be practical on BBC Scotland. And any flagship non-news content on BBC Scotland could not air in the 9pm slot on weekdays.

Overall Scotland does need something more than it currently gets and BBC Scotland allows for a step change in Scottish content without meaning increasing numbers of network shows being dropped or moved to off-peak slots. Although from an English perspective, it would be very disappointing if any cuts were made to local/regional provision when the nations get increased spending. The nations have their own unique circumstances IMO but English regions shouldn't suffer

The Midlands/Eastern England pay the most Licence Fee monies and yet gain the least from it...the Midlands should be the first English Region to be looked at.

That's an odd geographic grouping. Surely London and the South East pay the most license fees?

I know the midlands has been somewhat downgraded televisually, but it doesn't miss out on anything that most other regions get regionally.... in fact in terms of local radio it gets a lot more. Most of the BBC activity in the West Midlands is backroom function, there is a lot of money being spent there than you'd think

The Scottish Six was a better idea in my opinion.

Scots are still going to watch the England biased Six and then at Nine only the most news hungry will watch the Scottish Nine, everyone else will be watching Silent Witness or Broadchurch
Night Thoughts, Stuart and GMc gave kudos

I only found this out on the BBC News at Six on the NC this evening. I would say fair play to them for trying this out.

It sounds encouraging to have more variants of Scottish programming on the channel for viewers to watch regularly.

The only thing that it will be a problem is that could be a lack of Scottish sports content available on the channel. Some of that content is currently showing in the daytime only. That would be the 6 Nations matches featuring Scotland's rugby team & also their other international test games. For football; The Scottish FA Cup is shown in the same time slot in, as you guessed it in the day time only.

You could see Guinness Pro 12 Rugby showing Scottish domestic rugby teams having their own matches on this new channel but that will depends on rights for them swapped from their other channels like BBC Alba, BBC Two Scotland & BBC Red Button.

The new hourly news bulletin will be an interesting watch while having news output being mixed from BBC Scotland, BBC News & BBC World to make for a high quality news bulletin for Scottish viewers combing with a Scottish perspective.

All in all; I can't wait for this channel to launch next year. It sounds like a very good decision to go ahead on principle.

Surely a Scottish Six would have been a cheaper option than a whole new channel?! The Scottish Nine is competing against primetime audiences so it won't do very well at all.

They could have gotten away with a Scottish Six without too much fuss from any criticising ministers from NI or Wales. Now that BBC Scotland is going to have it's own channel.... surely BBC Northern Ireland and BBC Wales should get their own channels too?

I'm no fan of the Public Accounts Committee and a lot of the grandstanding during select committee hearings but they should ask how a cash-strapped BBC has managed to find tens of millions of pounds down the back of the sofa to fund this.

I didn't come up with this geographical grouping...I agree it's strange.

My 'Beef' is about programming made for a National/International audience, not Regional programming. How can the Midlands get it's view across, how can the Midlands promote itself etc?

Pretty much agree with the consensus here, and now it makes sense why they released the BBC Wales iPlayer channel news a day ahead of plans for Scotland, though be interesting to see what follows for NI.

This won't end the anti-BBC arguments either - the next thing will be suggestions that the Scottish only part of the service should be independent of the BBC.

I have given some thought, today, and I just can't change my mind on this, BBC just likes wasting money on stupid ideas which may sound great but never are. Its also clear as day, the BBC just doesn't want a Scottish six and would rather spend more money on other options. We already have Scottish programmes on BBC 1 and 2. Its just pure bonkers and the extreme level or nationalism yet keeping full control in London.

Money really would be better spent on a few more doc, another comedy and maybe a decent Gameshow that wasn't crap and presenter by nick. dont worry when the BBC was at Edinburgh Highland show with its stand I said that.

Its a complete an utter joke, and this will not solve any problems and what Brekkie posted and James reply are spot on.

excel99 its already happened, and even one day last year Holyrood afternoon programmes was moved to BBC one, I think because of Scottish bowls on BBC two? Hows that going to work out.
