It was terrible for people in Northern Ireland have to wait to late Friday to get their results before 2010. The security in the province before 2010 was necessary, don't count over night as the count centres would be liable for bomb alerts, either real or hoax.

I remember occasions when local council and European elections on a Thursday. The local council elections would be counted on the Friday daytime, sometimes running into the Saturday. Then we'd be waiting until Monday evening for the European results - because we don't declare election results on a Sunday.

Bonkers.

That's what happens when you've Proportional representation (PR) elections. As to Sundays... thank the DUP for that.

Going back to election night itself, one thing that surprised me was that the Northern Ireland seats were declared on the night itself rather than the next day as is traditional. This meant that everything, except the very late Kensington result, was wrapped up by the morning. Normally there's still results coming in the 3pm.

Made for better coverage, and I'm sure made it easier for the broadcasters

I think (but might be wrong) that changed back in 2015, possibly in part due to the expectations of a coalition.

Actually the first overnight count was way back in 2010!

Actually they had overnight counts in 1992! Gerry Adams losing West Belfast happened in the middle of the night. Don't think any happened overnight for the next few years.

Indeed, I was going to say that, because it's in the BBC coverage, as repeated the other week - and makes the last few hours a bit dull because everything's done and dusted by lunchtime and there aren't even many Northern Irish results to cover. I think only a few seats counted overnight, possibly just the Belfast ones, with the rest counting during the day as was familiar at the time. I think it was an experiment they didn't continue.

There used to be quite a few seats across the UK that didn't declare until Friday daytime. In 1983 Alan Beith is in the Beeb studio virtually all night because his seat in Berwick doesn't declare until the next day, and in 1997 I remember watching William Hague's declaration in a politics lecture (Jeremy Vine said that period was the best time to be a Political Correspondent as the government was in total chaos, and it was a great time to study it too). In 2001 I remember the last seat in England to declare was the Isle of Wight and it was only on ITV as the Beeb finished at one but ITV came back for an hour at two o'clock and caught it.

And in 1987, the Truro By-Election declaration was on Friday morning and shown on Open Air - http://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules/bbcone/london/1987-03-13#at-11.35

This may have been asked before, but does anyone know when the broadcasters learn of the exit poll figures? I know it's against the law to reveal them before 10pm but in this day of age i did think something would leak online in the hour leading up till 10pm. Also who is privy to them - just the producer / presenter and graphics team?

I saw the start of the Northern Ireland results show and before 10pm they mentioned they think Sinn Fein had done well....

In 1997 the Winchester result was not announced until around 6pm as there had been a number of recounts (the Lib Dem Mark Oaten won by 2 votes). I remember it being shown during the Six O'Clock News.

Would seem to only be a select few that know - the BBC's Chris Mason tweeted about being one of those who got to see it before 10pm.

Broadcasters on election programmes and party leaders get it at about 9:45pm. If you watch the docu-drama Coalition it shows Clegg and Cameron getting texts. Also as George Galloway was a party leader, he got told in 2015 and promptly leaked it, the dozy git. http://www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/george-galloway-reported-to-police-over-exit-poll-tweet-10234239.html

Yes, I think you're right. I was on a train coming back home (to Winchester) from London (where I'd been at ITN all day) at around that time. Someone in my carriage received one of those new fangled SMS messages, on one of those new fangled GSM phones ! The news spread like wildfire

Interesting video here of the behind the scenes look at ITV Election 2015 - https://vimeo.com/129806809 someone just emailed me. At 1.40 mark you see the real green screen set up for the ITV election night coverage, most likely very similar to the 2017 election.

Sorry a bit late on this, but the Galloway incident involved his own constituency, and not the national poll. He also said that several people were sending tweets from his account (in his party) and the tweet in question was a re-tweet of an account that wasn't traced, and so the CPS didn't feel further action would succeed.

You may be wondering why have I dragged this back up? My question is simple, the boundary commissions reports back next week about the review of 600 seat westminster, but since there no chance in hell that will get past now, does that mean the current boundary s will be in play thus the exit polls for the TV stations will be just like the past 3?
