Does anyone have any caps of the sofa set-up?

The sofa set-up was used again today..

Video here.

There's more shot variation in this 10 minutes than what normally happens in a typical hour!

Wish they would just use that view from the desk as they did when the channel moved in!

Well as I suspected, they going to shake up the views from the glass cube. Sadly the changes are so subtle only us presentation forumers will notice. I've only just noticed, as I dont watch Sky as much anymore. They changed the lights in the pillars across the way when using this new sofa view. They seem to be purple. And the new blue lights either side of the big screen are nice additions but simple not enough to add interest to this Tesco shed look.

The new colour-changing and LED lighting schemes means they could have done some amazing things with the backgrounds to match the graphics that can be used for specific shows and segments and then immediately turned off. Now it feels they are cobbling things together an its going to look messy. Clearly the view from the box wasnt deeply considered on the part of the viewer.

I agree completely, whilst the additions are very welcome, it’s all very piecemeal at the moment and in danger of starting to look a bit all over the place! All those rectangle light boxes are very inconsistent and don’t seem to have any rhyme or reason for being there other than making things look a bit cluttered! It’s as though they realised they needed to add colour and sent a work experience lad out to B&M bargains with £50 from the petty cash!

Some led light walls/screens in the background would look fantastic and could actually make the glass box look really innovative... The blue lights on the news hour are undoubtedly the best addition we have seen so far so more along those lines would be good! While we are at it, a lick of Dulux Brilliant White wouldn’t go amiss on the opposite shots overlooking the corridors and the atrium. Maybe a more inviting sofa area and dare I say a rug for the ‘cosier stuff’ would have a big impact too.

All this stuff is pretty basic and I can’t understand why no one at the channel has picked up on it yet... I mean, I know that we are pres enthusiasts and maybe we are a bit more opinionated than the casual viewer but surely that’s the kind of person that should be in charge of this kind of thing at Sky! Someone who is passionate about it rather than ‘that’ll do’.

We all seem to be of a similar opinion when it comes to what we’d like to see from the glass box so it doesn’t seem beyond the realms of possibility that others within Sky News must feel the same... I wonder what the likes of Kay, Steven, Sarah, Gillian, Anna and co think of things? I can’t imagine that they are fans of the box. I certainly don’t feel like they prefer presenting their shows from there having previously been in the vastly superior Sky News Centre.

I sometimes like to imagine that the powers that be read these forums and will surprise us with some of the things we’ve asked for. Sometimes I’m even convinced that stuff has changed in line with things that have been suggested on here in the past!!

I think there’s chance yet for the box to redeem itself if only there was a little more imagination. The virtual studio however is beyond help and needs to be consigned to the history books along with the Sky Gnome Very Happy

Well the extra blue lighting is a welcome change, that is for sure, it feels more like the Sky News of old and more familiar, warm and has a bit of an identity.

Sofa still looks terrible - not a match for this:

A reminder of how bland the Glass Box looked at launch

It's looking much better now, but still not a patch on the old Sky News Centre.

Having the view of Sky Central does help with the presentation for sure - it's so much more visually interesting than the corridor they often use as a backdrop and makes the channel feel much more of a hub of operations.

I do like that they're trying to do different things and vary up the presentation a bit at least - sadly with the Sunrise studio it's so basic that there's not a huge amount you can do with that studio.

It does feel though that if Sky were prepared to do so they have the perfect Sky News Centre replacement in the current SSN studio which really does feel like a proper news studio.

There are elements of the Glass Box that come across as being 'cold' - mainly because of the white and beige colours that are used. I agree that the sofa does look a little strange, but given the style used in the rest of the building, a bright red one might have looked out of place too.

I really don't get why people still prefer the old Sky News Centre. Don't get me wrong, I used to really like the presentation that came from that studio - the creative presentation positions, adventurous camera shots and perhaps a slightly more interesting style. That said, it was of its time and I don't really feel that this garish look with pretty much wall to wall blue and red really portrays the image of a professional news service in today's world.

Personally, I think that the Glass Box helps to modernise the image of Sky News and so I don't really understand the view that sticking with the old studio would take the channel forward for the next few years. Things need to change to stay modern and to attract and retain new viewers (particularly younger audiences which are are far less likely to watch traditional television news).

I still think the glass box, on the whole, looks really good. It’s the horrible garish colours and design of the graphics that makes it look odd. Some neat modern-looking straps and a more up-to-date music would make a huge difference.

If we're gonna go down that road, Stephen once tweeted that the glass box was much nicer to work in.

(I went looking for the tweet because I'm sad and have nothing else better to do... Laughing )

And yes, I agree that the virtual set leaves a lot to be desired...

EDIT: Whilst trawling through Twitter I found this picture of some sofas in Sky Central. I'm quite surprised they haven't used these for Kay Burley's slot:

They can’t just go around nicking furniture from Sky buildings, you know. There are other people who work there, it doesn’t ‘belong’ to Sky News

Sorry, I should have clarified - I wasn't suggesting that they steal sofas from other parts of the building Very Happy What I meant was that they could go and do the interviews from that area.

Those sofas, or rather the people sat on them, are not going to look good on TV. TV sofa's aren't comfortable to sit on, they force you to sit up properly and stop you from slouching, they're higher than many normal sofas too, so your knees aren't raised above your waist. Just grabbing a random couch and using it on screen is the folly of several of the local TV channels.

Those sofas at Sky Central were used for some editions of SWiPE.
