Simon has just confirmed on twitter that todays his last day at BBC News after 18 years. I will miss him he's an excellent presenter and always manages to make what ever programme he is presenting better

He is bar far the best presenter on the News Channel, going to be a huge loss

NYTV, DE88 and oflahertya gave kudos

Sad to see Simon go. A great presenter and a massive loss to the News channel.

Can only hope he's going to pop up on GMB!

What! We get this piece of news right before this forum is due to close! Today should be declared a national day of mourning on here! He will be very missed.

Wowzers! Say it isn’t so! The McCoy has left the Beeb!

Terrible news. Any hopes of Afternoon Live returning to air sometime soon have now been completely shattered.

Where next? GMB have a vacant slot. It would be a travesty if he doesn’t make a swift return to mainstream broadcasting very quickly.

I think we should all hold up a pack of paper as a moment of TV Forum reflection!

Absolutely shocked. He’s one of the best in the business with a very loyal following.

One has to wonder if he perhaps as has been suggested that he has been approached by GMB. He’s certainly got everything they’d be looking for to fill that spare chair.

I’m not sure whether afternoons on the News Channel will be the same.

Surely Simon's notice period is longer than GMB has had a vacant seat so he couldn't resign for it

Anita said her director is leaving today too and Rob Burley said it's his final Politics Live, maybe not a coincidence
