Well Kate Egan is in the temporary studio for tonight's Main Evening News, so no relaunch tonight. Looks more likely Monday 28th January 2019 - as RTE said to me "late January" for the new look, this must be the launch date.

I have had word from RTE News team that the relaunch is set for tomorrow Monday 28th January 2019.

You would have seen that in today's Irish newspapers.

RTE has told the media today that the studio pics are embargoed until 2pm tomorrow - with the big reveal on tv on the Six One bulletin.

Don't have access to the Irish papers, I just emailed RTE news desk and got a reply from them at lunchtime.

The article in the Sunday Independent about the revamped studio is a recycle of the tender document from RTÉ. The only new details we learn about the studio is:
- There is a bank of tv screens
- A green couch in the soft area of the studio.

All to be revealed in less than 24 hours!

With the new look, I just wish RTE would kick start a rejigged news output on RTE 1 and RTE 2.

Bringing back a late night news on RTE 2 would be a good start. If they are worried about money, they really need to close down RTE News Now. It is not watched and it is useless as a news channel. Just the RTE 1 news bulletins repeated on a loop with the odd live update during the day. RTE News Now will never be BBC News Channel or Sky News, the money is not there, so they really need to stop pretending it is and close it down.

Take the money wasted on keeping RTE News Now on air and move it into the television news budget and bring more news programming, especially on RTE 2.

ITV News realised their ITV News Channel was failing and closed it down in December 2005 - RTE News need to take the same approach now in 2019.

Sorry, I don't think it is useless, especially because it serves more than one purpose. Yes, as a news channel, it's more basic than the old Satellite News Channel back in the early 80s, which had updated bulletins every 4 hours or so, with replays in between, but it also works as a way of connecting the Irish diaspora back to Ireland, and of reaching out to those outside of the diaspora.

As for ITV News and their channel, they really didn't give it a chance to bed in with potential viewers, and were incredibly short sighted in pulling the plug on it. That is a mistake RTE should not be making now.

RTE News Now only airs the RTE 1 news programmes, with updates at 10.00am, 11.00am, 12.00pm, 3.00pm, 4.00pm, 5.00pm and 11.00pm. The rest is just repeated news programming and the current affairs programming from RTE 1. All of this can easily be received by the Irish on the RTE Player International, and so News Now is not needed.

The RTE News Now channel needs a massive overhaul to really be worth keeping on air. Even RTE's director general has hinted at the channel's closure this year.

But RTE Player International is an on-demand service. The fact that RTE News Now airs these at the same time as RTE1, internationally, is a good thing. If it goes back to being online only, that would be fine, it wouldn't really matter about closing it on Saorview and Saorsat. But closing it entirely, in a world where newscasts air live around the world online, would be a huge mistake.

RTE News bulletins are available internationally online through their RTE Player, so there would be no issue for international audiences viewing RTE News content. I would be interested in knowing what is the current budget for RTE News Now. Does anyone know?

Significantly less than making a breakfast show and late night news show.

RTE is the national broadcaster, and funded mostly by licence fee money. They should be able to spend a decent amount of money on news output on RTE 1 and RTE 2 without the need of a news channel which really is not needed.
