I imagine it's a cable access hole so things can be wired up without having to run a cable around the set.

It's actually a mouse hole for the Midlands Today resident rodent, Jerry.

I think it's absolutely fine single headed, but perhaps that's because I'm used to watching them presented that way now. Plenty of company for Nick in the studio today - I think if it was double headed you wouldn't have the reporters in the studio anymore. Shefali joked that Nick was being kept at a distance.

It would be nice to see two presenters again on Midlands Today - however are the budgets there for that kind of thing? I know they're regional news magazine programmes. The set does look designed for two presenters though and only time will tell if they return to double headed presentation.

Other regions still seem to do it. It's one of those things like the new BBC Scotland channel they'd probably find the money if they really wanted to do it.
I wouldn't be surprised if Nick Owen doesn't come cheap though and if that's the case in this day and age they'd probably have to pay the female co-presenter the same which would make the talent more expensive than say Spotlights.
I think it is a really wasted opportunity to do the job properly. Real shame the titles, music and screens haven't changed. Pretty sure you can achieve those things without spending a lot of money. I've given it a few weeks to settle down and I'm surprised that a, it seems to be the same camera shots as before and b, there is no movement. It does feel as if they've got a new set in and then not really worked out what to do with it.
I think they were right not change the background, as I doubt they'd have come up with anything better and it looks a lot better now and if they kept with the a fake newsroom concept it would be odd for the layout to totally change overnight. So would have been change for the sake of it and the new set allows you to appreciate the backdrop more.
The camera shots are going to the same as before, they layout hasn't really changed and it's not like there is any more space for the cameras, what this sat has managed to do is make the space look a lot bigger.
As for the titles well they'll get round to updating them whenever. Escpecially if double headed presentation is brought back if that indeed is the intention.
Agree the space looks bigger but it is crying out for some movement - even a locked off wide would help. I just feel they've got more to play with and we're not seeing it yet which is a shame.
