I think the quality of the coronavirus coverage has varied between the broadcasters really. There's certainly been a great quantity of coverage about it but at times not enough quality or context - which arguably has added to the panic.
Having bulletins dominated by it and a lot of reporting of the worst case scenarios and talk without much context of 'lockdowns' elsewhere (without saying how likely this is in the UK and how soon it may be likely) and breathless reporting of numbers infected or impacted (which of course will rightly be reported and needs mentioned) fuels the sort of panic we've seen with stockpiling of toilet roll and the like. It's one issue many a news broadcaster has had in recent years - breathless reporting but not enough context and explanation and asking of questions that Joe Bloggs would want to know/needs the answer to. I remember mentioning an ITV news bulletin here last week that didn't give much context and seem to go for the more alarmist, sensationalist style of coverage with might, may and could doing overly heavy lifting.

Somewhat surprisingly, I think CNNI's coverage has been far better than most. At the start they did seem overly obsessed by the 'Diamond Princess' ship but they seem much better at analysing and providing context and making the fact clear from fiction. QMB tonight has been superb for example - pointing out the very real risks markets are facing and stressing how big a story this is but also emphasising that markets are better placed to cope than 11-12 years ago so not unnecessarily fueling panic.

Here's a hypothetical question taking the issue to an extreme. If it was discovered there was an extinction grade asteroid headed our way (don't want to be morbid, but it really is a case of when rather than if)

On the bright side, it would be just the reboot this planet needs. We've totally fcuked it up as a species.

Merry Christmas!

Got up from the wrong side of the bed today, Mark?

They werenโ€™t on the ball at the start of this story in Jan. Endless coverage of the Trump impeachment trial on CNNI. Other international news channels were providing significantly better coverage. CNNI had a strap up.

I'd agree with that. CNNI was a mixed bag for the first 5-6 weeks of the year - they covered the international stories like the Australian bushfires quite well when they had the chance but then they'd simulcast CNN Domestic endlessly the second anything Trump or impeachment related happened.

Since the impeachment ended and the simulcasts reduced significantly and they've stopped mentioning the 'Diamond Princess' every 2 seconds (you'd have been forgiven at times for thinking all the coronavirus cases were on that ship with how much they covered it at one stage) the coverage has moved up a gear and shown off CNNI at its best. Their team of Asia correspondents in particular have been brilliant - Matt Rivers, the talented Will Ripley, Paula Hancocks among them.

Could we see the News At 10 bulletins extended? Between the collapse in the markets, the dramatic geopolitical situation that led to the oil price drop and now one of the world biggest economies being put under lockdown, it's been a quite mammoth news day.
Even by the standards of recent years, I'm struggling to think of a day quite like this. An event like Harry & Meghan's last royal engagement (at least for now) would lead the news most days - today it's more likely to be a 'and finally' story.

Bringing it back to the trivial matter of television but be interesting to see how it affects their version of Big Brother currently airing. Obviously the housemates are effectively in quarantine anyway but there is the crew to consider. I suspect they might pause evictions for 2 weeks. I also suspect HMs may not believe it to be anything other than a task.

CNNI have decided with Italy going into lockdown that now is the perfect time to join CNN Domestic whoare filling time ahead of a Trump speech with barely a passing mention of the breaking Italy news or market collapse. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems an incredibly bizarre decision.

They've actually extended it's run. They probably now won't be able to start the civilian series on time, so I guess that fills the airtime.
