It's absolutely ridiculous. I keep seeing this big red block in the corner of the screen, and my eye is instantly drawn to it. Frankly the whole flipper is a joke now that it only reports headlines off CNN.com - half of them don't make sense (particularly the sport ones).
I can't think of a single tinker to these graphics which has been positive. The new location box with map when they do a live cross is too big, and it's forced the text straps to be scrunched up more. The changes to the breaking news straps are disappointing. The new maps don't look half as good as the old ones, and the font used on them is out of place. CNN has done this time and time again over the years - they've taken a half decent graphics set and progressively made it look worse.

I agree. Recently when I've been watching the graphics are terrible, especially the straps. Usually one line is the usual font size, but the next line is smaller or squashed just so it can all fit on, and not collide with the box containing the map.
I haven't yet seen the changes to the flipper, but it sounds like the color coding has been faded out.

The news stories on the BBC World breakfiller are taken directly from the website, same image, same headline and the first paragraph of the story.
I personally don't see what the fuss is all about, but if it doesn't make sense (the headlines) then they need to make it clearer online.

I preferred the previous colour coding of the different news contents. You mean the text on the flippers are kind of a RSS-reader, that grabs of the text from CNN.com?
Oh my.
