It's been interesting to see Kate, Sophie and Mishal in studio rolling news mode over recent weeks, not just back filling the 1pm hour. Mainly because its so rare.

I wonder if we'll see Huw and Fiona taking a turn as well?

I think it was back in 2007 when some of the 'big hitters' started doing shifts/relief shifts on the News channel. George, Sophie and Huw all did make appearances outside of the BBC One bulletins.

Doubt we will see Huw as he clearly takes priority for the 6 and 10 bulletins Monday-Wednesday, he doesn’t seem to work Thursdays or Fridays anymore.

Don’t see the need for Fiona to do it either now as the likes of Huw and Simon begin to return and the combination of using the same presenter on the 6 and 10 makes the number of presenters needed lower.

I wonder if the real reason for Sophie appearing on the update today is down to the desire to have a senior presenter in the building for as much as the day as possible in case of changes in the Boris situation. There is little point in having Sophie present this update early in the week if it means a less experienced presenter ends up reading the six and ten towards the end of the week.

You could be right. Or maybe Clive or Reeta will do the Six and Ten towards the end of the week, but need a couple of days off since they both presented Monday and Tuesday.

I'm pretty sure Sophie would have done the News at One instead if they wanted someone 'senior' in the building this morning, and Jane would have done the Special.

I guess you could say that, however I’m sure she will present tomorrow’s 6 and 10, and if not Clive also on Friday. And, I would assume with Huw being in he would be the one called on air if there is any change in situation?

This pandemic coverage has certainly answered some long-running TVF questions - particularly ‘Can Studio E change colour’ and ‘Would Fiona Bruce be able to present rolling news’

She presented rolling news (of sorts) after the PM’s lockdown announcement

I don't think proof has ever stopped TV Forumers speculating about things and it'll take more than a pandemic for that to happen!

Rich Preston is currently anchoring BBC News overnight. He's quite good. Is he regular or has he been deployed to cover the current shortage?

Hwu, Kate, Sophie and Mishal all have at some point presented rolling news on BBC News Channel and/or BBC World News.

Mishal was the main overnight presenter before joining Breakfast and is still an occasional relief presenter for BBC World News. She has also done stints in Washington and Singapore as a presenter.

Hwu presents an hour of news at 5pm, Kate and Sophie started as a news channel presenter, and Kate is still an occasional relief presenter for BBC News Channel and BBC World News

Not quite...

Mishal started out on World Business Report in about 2001, give or take, before taking over the 2000-0100 GMT shift when it was vacated by Philip Hayton. She didn't do overnights, per se - they were presented by Clarence Mitchell, Rageh Omaar, Heather McCarthy, Martine Croxall, Susan Osman, Deborah MacKenzie and Alastair Yates around that time. Mishal pretty quickly moved to Washington in around about late 2002 to launch the first Washington/London newscast with Adrian Finighan. Then it was on to Breakfast.

In terms of Sophie Raworth, she didn't start out on the BBC News Channel. After presenting regional news (in the Yorkshire region, I think) she graduated to Breakfast News in the late 1990s, before moving to the Six in 2003 and she's stayed on BBC One bulletins ever since. She may have presented on the News Channel in more recent times, but I'm not sure when. She didn't start out as a rolling news presenter, anyway.

Sophie was the co-anchor of Breakfast with Jeremy Bowen when it morphed from Breakfast Time to its current incarnate. From there she went to deputise for Anna Ford on the One, and took over as the programme's main presenter before moving to the Six with George Alagiah.

Sophie was never official deputy on the One. Upon leaving Breakfast in November 2002, she took over as co-anchor of the Six with George Alagiah in January 2003. She may have covered the One in Anna Ford's absence during this time (like when she famously took over half way through a bulletin when Anna's voice gave way) but she was never the deputy. She stayed on the Six until 2005 when she went on maternity, until 2006 when she returned and officially took over the One full time following Anna's retirement. Nowadays though she spends most of her time covering the Six/Ten more than anything.

Darren Jordon was - for a time - the deputy on both Breakfast and the One.
