Love the logo. Bright and cheeky - fits the brand. Less sold on the rounded font being used for supporting text - NEWS, STAR, etc. It's not so much that it's a rounded font - although I'm not saying it's ideal either - to my eye, I think it's the compressed spacing that makes it seem awkward.
I also wasn't sure that the same five colours needed to be used across all channels. For example, could 5USA use red, white and blue?
I do like the new logo, like others have said, it makes you think of the original logo, which is a good thing.
I like your idea of using the different colours from the logo to match different genres of programming, but I don't think it works as much for each channel. Maybe it would work better if you had the colour as the background like you have, but don't have the font as a faded version of the same colour. That doesn't work.
With the name for 5star, why not think along the line of Channel 4's channels. Maybe not starting the channel with 5 at the beginning, but having 5 somewhere in the name. Like E4 doesn't start with the 4 etc. Just a thought.
For the end board, following the theme of the colours matching the genre, and using the actual logo. (Hard to describe my idea, so hope people get some sort of understanding).
Towards the end of the promo, the circle (without the 5 inside it) spins sidewards across the screen and zooming then stopping to focus on the correct colour for the promo. As it focuses on the colour, the details needed are contained within the shape, then as the voice over says 'on Channel 5' the colours spin again but zoom out until its back to a full circle, this time with the 5 back inside it.
Sorry I know its not the best description. I have the idea in my head but no idea how to put it in to writing. Also have no idea how to do animation so couldn't do it myself.
Stick with the logo you have though, and just keep working on different developments. Keep posting your different ideas here, would love to see this progressing.
How about for the 'coming up' menu or trailer end board, the 5 logo is in the corner with the colours slowly rotating around it, and then a particular colour (matching the type of programme is is for, movies, sport etc) comes out with the programme info on it whilst the background is a faded image or video of the programme being advertised? When it's over, the colour retracts back into the logo, the colours spin around faster and the 5 moves more central to the screen, just as the CA is saying "...on Channel 5".
God, I wish I know how to use video creation software so I could show people some ideas I had properly!
OK, I made a very quick and dirty picture showing kind of what I mean, just try and imagine it animated, and the colour where the text appears changes (as does the 5 logo) depending on the type of programme being trailed. It could also be used as a coming up slide across all of the C5 channels, with the logo in the middle changing as the picture in the background fades into another and the colours spin around and stop on a different colour than previously.
Remember, this is a quick, cheap and nasty mock, please don't tell me it looks terrible and I have no skill, I already know this!
I didn't change it as I didn't find any suitable font on my system in time, so just used what was already done.
I think the original 1997 logo would work great and would love to see it revived, but with a coloured circle like this in place of the coloured bars below it, like the two are incorporated into one design.
The new font is a huge improvement. I think you should change the colours of the logo for e each brand. I just don't think logos with multiple colours work on TV when logos are being used in many ways. The 5USA one just doesn't look good with the logo colours and then the USA colours alongside it.
Altogether though, a good improvement so well done.
