Sky entertainment boss Stuart Murphy is leaving the organisation after six and a half years, RadioTimes.com can reveal.

The executive who launched Sky Atlantic and is in charge of the main entertainment channels – Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Sky Arts and Sky Living – has left without a job to go to. However he has signed a content deal with the broadcaster which will see him develop his own scripts.

Very sad to see him step down. Changed Sky for the better.

In what way? Sky 1 and Sky Living are more lost now than they've ever been.

Sky1 is only really starting to turn around. The acquisitions of the former Virgin channels diluted Sky1 and only now is it feeling to be an all round general entertainment channel in peak again.

There's a job going at the BBC Wink

When a senior executive leaves with no job to go there's usually a bit more to it than what is said publicly.

And Friday afternoon is the time of choice when you want to release news quietly.

They have 4 main general entertainment channels and they don't seem to know what to do with them.

Sky 1 is a mess.
Sky 2 is like the long lost relation who has found his family, but they aren't interested in reconnecting with him.
Sky Atlantic is a mish-mash of UK & US programmes, some of which could/should be on Sky 1/Living and vice versa.
Sky Living is trying to be more general rather than female but the name and majority of the content isn't helping change perception.

Make
* Sky1 all UK production
* Sky Atlantic all US productions
* Sky living is scrapped
* sky 2 best of classic

That way it can give the channels some much needed force.

Sounds like he's got plenty to do:

Doesn't sound suspicious or unusual for someone who's been in a top job for years to want a bit of a career break and do something new, especially as he says he can obviously afford to take a couple of years off

He's still keeping ties with Sky too, so doesn't sound like there's any bad blood
London Lite and VMPhil gave kudos

He's the person who brought in all their original production. Think back a few years and they did very little outside of sport, Sky wasn't somewhere you went for British comedy or drama, now it is (although they don't rate that well, but that's just because it's Sky!)

So you'd have some of Sky's best non HBO US series behind a Sky/NOW TV only paywall? The best of the US/UK on Sky1 works and The Simpsons is still decent filler.
