It's such a nice surprise this, because I had feared the BBC's Christmas presentation was in terminal decline.
For me this is in the top three Christmas idents since the circle era began in 2006. It's right up there challenging for top spot with the Doctor Who ident in 2009, the street of 2010 and snowball of 2006.
In fact, this effort could be my favourite even since the balloon era, I certainly prefer it to any in the dancing era. I'm not as easily impressed as I used to be, but this has impressed me.
After seeing the end board I hoped for a lovely ident and they have provided.
Everything from the build up, the setting and up to the music are wonderful.
I like how the two seen so at have different first scenes entering the forest.
Being a little picky here but the form up comes a little too early on the tardis ident.
The baking one looked lovely with the bright colours against the winter backdrop.
I do agree on the timing being very early in December, but they do have to justify their spending and airing them for longer is one way of doing that.
Haven't the past few years used the song (of which the ident music is based) as the song for their promotional campaign? Maybe this will creep up on a drama promo.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but, unlike the other two versions, the first version's BBC logo begins to form up just
before
the end shot appears.

Yeah, I noticed that when it first aired. Bit odd how they've done it with one ident and not the other, but with such lovely (and expensive) idents, we can't complain really.

They're very close in spirit to Snowball. That was a great Christmas ident.
I'm being critical here not because they are bad, but because they are good.
If there are long and short versions it's shameful the BBC launched them with a short version of the Doctor Who ident. The build up focused on the individual trees is the best part, so to just air it for a few seconds after airing about 73 back to back promos is ridiculous - usually the debut gets a nice long play out.
The GBBO version with the longer build up worked much better IMO - think the music is pretty good and I do like the concept. However I do think the end reveal is rather weak and letting down these idents - IMO it would be better to end either by scanning up the tree to a shining star, or panning out to reveal the individual tree as the focus of the ident, with the BBC One logo moved to the bottom if needs be. (And for those who point out neither a star or tree is circular shape, neither is their arrangement of trees!)
