Yes, the nineties was the best era for BBC Christmas presentation. It wasn't just the idents, it was the stings and everything around them. There seemed to be a great attention to detail. They could learn a thing or two from those days!
There have been some great idents since mind, just not quite 'the whole package'.
In recent years I've liked 2009 (Doctor Who and the reindeer) and 2010 (the street lighting up), 2011 went drastically down hill with the celebs prancing around, 2012 was the worst ever (it's showtime), 2013 picked things up a little bit.
2012 had a few variations and looked good. Last year's were a bit dull but felt more Christmassy. The 1999 balloon with a Northern Lights Santa was beautiful. It was such a nice surprise as the trailers and stings have you no clue. Santa dropping presents in 2000 was wonderful too.
We've had some great idents in the circle era, Snowball, Penguins, Doctor Who, Wallace and Gromit and the snow covered cul-de-sac were the best. But unlike some 90s ones got boring after a few days.
The Christmas balloons were beautiful. My favourite was 1999 (aurora balloon). In many ways it's a shame they weren't around a little longer, they could've stood up to 2 weeks of usage.
Snowball and Cul-De-Sac were definitely the best of the circle era so far.
The 2009 ident had a lot going for it too, shame there wasn't a separate version without Tenant on, as it aged remarkably quickly on-screen after that episode of DW. I remember reading someone on this forum back then who actually

Wallace and Grommit and David Tenant's Doctor Who idents were great in their own right, but just weren't strong enough to last right throughout Christmas. Cul-de-sac was beautiful though. Nice and Chrismassy and fun.
2011 was quite dire. It's a shame they didn't make more of the Carol singers at the end of the big promo. They could have easily made a circular ident out of that.

Well don't forget they did have this very lovely news ident in 2009 without Tennant: http://youtu.be/TTxhW2Snl7M
There were some nice stings too and even a lovely breakdown slide with accompanying music! (An instrumental of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing): http://youtu.be/BTFPh-HH3ig

Yes, I still think this is the best news ident out of the recent packages - the music is just right, not too upbeat and not too sombre.

Hated the 2011 idents as soon as I saw them. That being said, they still manage to beat the next two years' presentation to the ground

I have come across this nice in correct order and date montage. Strangely in 1980 BBC has a computer ident and then switched back.

And the 2009 news ident became the ident after Tennant regenerated. That was a perfect news ident. One thing they got right in the nineties was the Christmas idents was perfect leading into the news. The Rhythm and Movement idents at Christmas Always felt flippant leading into the news. The Wallace & Gromit news ident in 2008 and the one in 2011 were too upbeat for news. Once again BBC Northern Ireland showed them how to do it 2011, then in 2012 & 2013 Network wised up and did the same as BBC NI with no music on the news idents.
