Does anyone else thinks this is a red hearing? it makes no since, and BBC trust still hast to found another £85m to save.

From what I've read regarding how much the BBC will really save doing this, how 6Music's potential closure gave it a listening boost, and from what gottago has posted, I'm inclined to agree.

Part of me thinks this is the BBC's way of pushing the Government to increase the Licence Fee when they see the public outcry from the loss of services.

Ask that same public if they're prepared to cough up an extra 30 quid a year to safeguard Russell Howard and Family Guy repeats and any public outcry at loss of service is likely to be somewhat muted methinks. If that's their strategy it will backfire spectacularly.

It wouldn't be an extra £30 a year - it would be just over £4, even less actually considering they're putting the savings back into BBC1.

Honestly, if this could lead to a return of the 90's type BBC 2, I'd be happy to see both channels go. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem likely, given the money they're saving is going to BBC One drama.

Depressing moment in work yesterday when we came up with a decent idea for a new show and then realised that the only place we could really take it would be BBC Three. No point in taking it now as at most we would get one series on TV if we were lucky or an iPlayer only budget which probably wouldn't be worthwhile.

In fact I can expect the quality of the channel's output to decline somewhat over the next year with no guarantee for indies over the future of any new ideas they bring to the table.

People have argued that all BBC3 shows could easily be found on other channels but from a development perspective this simply isn't true. There are a lot of ideas that we simply couldn't take to any other channels because they're not commercial enough and it really is scandalous that those sort of programmes are going to be lost online and reluctantly tucked away on BBC2 like a Gaelic programme.

We're not just losing a place for new actors, directors and writers to flourish, we're losing a platform for young people entering production for the first time. I had my first work experience working on several BBC3 shows and in development there. The teams were small and you got to get your hands on areas of production that on bigger programmes you wouldn't get to experience until you were much more senior. I wouldn't be working where I am now if it wasn't for that channel.

Well said - and I hope you put that post forward to the BBC Trust whenever they do open the consultation.

I don't get it why is BBC One getting more money in a time when they are making cuts across the board. It makes no sense

Trust me I'll be writing something much more strongly worded than that when the consultation opens!

Just one question on this topic. I am in support of keeping BBC3 as it is now and definitely be a completely backward move to remove the channel.

If, and I hope it is only if, BBC3 gets downgraded to online only, where will the overspill of prime-time sport - and other sport specials - go? Lets not forget it was less than 2 years when BBC3 was a 24 hour channel for the Olympic Games!!!

Yes I wouldn't mind if the channel started an hour later as they really do not have the content for a 7pm start as the programmes made for the 16-34 year old do tend to be specifically, in general, have to be shown after 9pm watershed!!!!

Aside from Free Speech they only actually commission new shows for the 9pm and 10pm (30 mins) slots so I think there is already a case for pushing the start time back an hour to 8pm anyway. The 7pm hour on Three tends to rate less than half of whatever is shown at 8pm.

Would that not be because it isn't on air before 7? If pushed back to 8, wouldn't the 8pm hour be just as low?
