Caught the BBC local/national mash up properly for the first time just now and it really doesn't work too well. We had Rob effectively do a sign off just before handing over to the weather presenter and at the end cut to a silent giant outlook slide, seemingly designed for those with impaired vision. I guess that's there to mask the presenters who would be in the same position suddenly changing. It feels forced and not very slick but I'm not really sure what another solution could be.

I don't understand why the weather isn't broadcast within the Ten, just like the One and Six. It would be more consistent, and wouldn't affect the run-time of the National and Regional News slot.

Because in some regions (such as Northern Ireland) they do not revert to the national forecast. It's handled as part of the local broadcast.

It would take up time in the 10 O'clock News that would mean (in all probability) one less story being featured.

The only way would be for the nations to opt first, then the weather for the English regions and then a second opt point after the weather. On paper I see no reason why it would lead to one less story for the Ten - it is just reallocating time. It would potentially lead to a smaller audience for the nations and regions because Newsnight would end up starting about the same time as the nations and regions rather than towards the end of the local news.

A bit of a slip up, we're getting ITV Central's Weather forecast in London.

How long has SSE/Airtricity been sponsoring UTV weather? Feels weird not have Progressive anymore.

With Amanda Houston presenting West Country and Tyne Tees & Border from London today (and not Anglia her usual patch) I get the impression ITV are phasing in weather hubs for weekdays as well as weekends. However they could just be cutting back further and not using someone like Manali Lukha who has disappeared.

Amanda also did the weather for Wales as well.

I dont think they are having weather hubs for weekdays, just presenters for those regions were not available today so Amanda covered them.

A slight glitch on this evening's BBC London forecast which was from the Weather Centre's CSO studio.

Aidan McGivern presented the weather on ITV Wales one day during the week (Wednesday I think) and Amanda Houston did today's forecast as part of the Anglia/London/Wales weather hub (we had James Wright yesterday but he did the Westcountry/Meridian weather hub today).

It seems to be the case now that any presenter from any region will cover the weather in any given region when needed, as well as using national presenters. For example in Wales during the past month we have had James Wright, Carl Edwards, Amanda Houston, Aidan McGiven, Sian Lloyd, Alex Beresford, Becky Mantin, Manali Luka and Kate Haskell all present the weather, there may even be some ive missed as not seen every forecast.

Westcountry have had even more variations, i've seen Kerry Gosney and Jon Mitchell (from Yorkshire) and Simon Parkin (Meridian) present the weather there in recent weeks as well as all the people who have presented for Wales apart from Aidan I think. I guess it makes sense on paper as they are all employees of ITV so if someone isnt working then whoever is available to record an extra forecast covers, but it does seem a bit strange when we keep seeing unfamiliar faces on the weather forecast in a particular region. I guess the average viewer wont even notice tho as the news presenter just introduces the forecast and says the name of the presenter and away they go.

How does the the Met Office notify people of severe weather? Say if there is a severe storm approaching? How do citizens find out.?

Alerts are given in the usual weather forecasts. Met Office aren't responsible outside of this. They will usually mention the Environment Agency and give the number too. You can then be alerted from them of anything for your area should you want to Smile

Wow. So basically there isnt any immediate warning. I know the UK doesnt have US style severe weather, I was just wondering what mechanism exist. Interesting.
