Call me old fashioned, but I believe Christmas preparations are to begin on the first day of Advent - 1st December this year. The BBC should be showing an advent candle as their ident to represent this.
I have to say, such alarmist and fallaciously deduced comments really irk me.
Excuse me?
Call me old fashioned but I feel it's way too early for Christmas idents. They seem to be getting earlier and earlier. They'll be in November before we know it. It's about two weeks too early for me. The evening of Friday 20th would've been my choice for the start of Christmas presentation.

As Advent can begin between Nov 27 and Dec 3 depending on which day of the week Christmas Day falls on, then Mr Kite's supposition that Christmas presentation could start in November would seem to be in line with Bilky's comment that the BBC should show an Advent candle as their ident from the first day.

Interesting that people are saying that these simple idents are a consequence of DQF, but I can't believe that BBC Northern Ireland's home-made ident from last year (which fits with the general theme of the circle idents much better than the curtain or this year's wrapping paper idents) will have cost that much to make?
Question is, what happens between Boxing Day and the New Year? Will wrapping paper still be appropriate?

I wouldn't take any notice. For some reason, he feels the need to take every opportunity to belittle people.
Anyway, I have to say that I really like this year's Christmas idents on BBC1. They are simple and tasteful and feel Christmassy enough. But I do agree with Mr Kite that they have launched far too early, especially with them being so simple. Friday 20th December is a good suggestion - that way they would only have been used for less than 2 weeks which is much more appropriate. I know the fashion seems to be to put your decorations up earlier and earlier each year, but there are still a lot of people who wait until much nearer Christmas.

BBC 1 has won the battle of the xmas ident this year.
Will the ident be changing on Christmas day to represent opening the present?

You say that people don't notice, but look at this year's Christmas adverts. The John Lewis Christmas advert has been viewed over 10 million times on YouTube, the song for it has gone to number 1. So people certainly notice when Christmas marketing is done well, why couldn't BBC1 aim for a similar impact?
Also, is the budget smaller or are they just choosing to spend it in a different way? In 2011 and 12 we had major Christmas promotions with lots of celebrities, this year we've got some bizarre, cheesy clips of people like Tom Jones and Huw Edwards together. It seems to me this is what they're spending the money on, which is money down the drain.
I think this year's idents are quite nice, a vast improvement on last year, but lacking much ambition at all. They should look at what John Lewis are doing and think about how they can translate their ideas into brilliant promotions and idents for BBC One, which work both as promotions for the channel and are also brilliant bits of TV in their own right.
Wow, you lot are very picky.
It's an ident used for a short period of time that is meant to represent Christmas.
Looking at what has been done, it serves the purpose.
Why waste time and money for something that most people don't really notice? Branding etc has gone all overboard. Remember the days of 1 ident? No tune either. Why does it have to be 3D with bells and whistles? It's nice to see things reigned in a bit.
The job done is decent. I don't think it's any better or worse than any previous efforts at all.

And then perhaps it could sit forlornly shredded in a dark bag for the remainder of the Christmas period?

I dont think anyone has actually won, more like alot of runner ups. I get the feeling BBC NI will win first prize.

The BBC1 idents are a bit bland. They're just endboards that announcers talk over. They look more festive than last year but at least something more striking visually happened. BBC2's are old but still look fresher than everything on the other channels. Quite a surprise that BBC2 has a good Christmas ident when their regular ones are ghastly.

What would have worked nice is the house set used for the Jones/Edwards singalong could have been used as an ident, have a log fire in one corner and a tree in the other a bit of moody lighting and then maybe blur it a bit as the BBCOne logo forms. Nice and warm and cosy atmosphere. No extra money used, in fact you could have kept the wrapping paper bit and torn it off at the start.
