Wow... its the TV version of a Tabloid Newspaper. American TV News proving itself to be complete and total garbage... and the use of the pop music is really cheesy.

And how goes America, the UK goes a few years down the line. I imagine it won't be that long before some British news provider tries something similar.

Compared with Daybreak? You're saying *that's* garbage? In my opinion that's waaayyyy more slick than Daybreak! For one thing, I'd actually sit down and watch New Day if I had the chance!

And here's the opening sequence for New Day , featuring... well, see (or rather hear) for yourself:

A great set and Michaela is a good addition but everything else is a bit meh.
Christ & Kate tried a bit too hard at times but that's understandable in first week.

That's a bit unfair, he only wants our love.

He is a seriously unimpressive anchor. If he wasn't a Cuomo he certainly wouldn't have risen so highly imo. I thought he was just average covering Boston a few months ago and I haven't seen a thing since to change my mind.

The 'great friends' act between the anchors seems a lot more natural here than on The Today show though. Matt Lauer trying to fake sincerity is funny in it's own way Wink .

I think when you start having features called "What I Learned on the Internets" you really need to take a look at your content. I'm struggling to imagine how this show would work on a serious news day, that's of course if CNN do serious news any more.

A hallmark of every new CNN programme launch is the beyond stupid gimmicks/items like this. I remember Erin Burnett's launch show was full of them too. Thankfully they dropped most of them within weeks.

New Day's ratings have been growing since Monday and on Thrusday it even beat CNBC's Morning Joe, by a small margin but still it's a great result for them!

Morning Joe actually airs on CNBC's sister channel, MSNBC

Definitely not a rip-off of CBS This Morning's set

So many screens! I don't know whether it will age well, but it looks kinda cool

Is that sarcasm?

While CBS This Morning wasn't the first to do these things this set has taken a LOT of cues from their set and mixed in a sofa:

Brick effect, CNN memorabilia on the shelving, loads of screens (Some mimicking gallery multiviewers) and an on set greenroom.

Clearly New Day is based on those network morning shows that Zucker perfected. It is a change for CNN which always had more news oriented morning shows but it's not a bad thing necessarily.

Charles Caleb Colton once wrote that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". If that aphorism stands then CBS This Morning should be proud. I've seen a few editions of New Day and it is an imitation of CBS' offering.

Exposed brickwork? Yes.
Glass-enclosed green rooms and offices? Yes.
Production assistants working in the background? Yes.
Glass-built anchor desk? Yes.
Shelving displaying memorabilia? Yes.
Generic guitar-based music as a theme? Yes.
Images of morning commute and sunrise? Yes (though hardly unique to CBS).
Random image of city/countryside in lower thirds BUG? Yes.
Anchor and headline story side-by-side? Yes.
Freestanding screen stationed around the set for presentation? Yes.
Opening montage with tagline similar to Eye Opener ("What you need to know... what you just have to see...") Yes.

What strikes me, however, is the move away from hard news and the decision to include soft items. This runs counter to CNN's traditional focus. CBS has embraced hard news and generally avoids any semblance of soft news on This Morning.

Not to mention that they were also designed by the same set designer, Jack Morton. Aside from the Piers Morgan set, almost all of CNN sets in the last several years have been done by Clickspring.

But you're right in that the similarities are only cosmetic. New Day has the standard CNN/American Morning fare, only they speed it up to include "more stories" in addition to more banter, lighter segments, and more guests.

CBS still has the best morning news program in US television. They have the right mix of hard news, politics, and other domestic and international news, and they approach lighter stories in a compelling, urbane manner. Even with New Day considered, I think CBS has produced the most groundbreaking and creative morning show since Morning Joe (which was created by the same producer).

Plus, Chris Cuomo is no Charlie Rose.

CBS's choice of a different direction for their Breakfast show - and their choice of Charlie Rose as anchor - gives me hope that there are still some intelligent / principled people left in US News.
