Shocked Where on earth was that?!

The staircase to nowhere is round the back of CCA. I *think* it once connected to the staircase on the right hand side of this plan (next to the 'snd app room'), but would have been severed when DTA was built.

It does look a bit like it never went anywhere - the ceiling is pretty solid-looking - but I think the sawn-off banister is enough of a giveaway.

just to correct myself... it never did go anywhere. It was built 'just in case', but they never actually used it. I've no idea why the top two bannisters have been cut off, though.

There is an equivalent on the other side of the wedge, where it's fairly obvious that some of it is a later addition.

Just to check, is the entire drama block to be demolished? Isn't that the bit with the amazing roof lights? I'd have thought that would have been listed.

It seems that Broadcasting house has already started being demolished too.. Sad indeed.

Does anyone have any plans/maps of TVC, including the locations of the news studios/newsroom etc that can be uploaded.

This wasn't possible before due to security, but now it should be OK.

Would be interesting to see where they all were in relation to each other.

Sorry if this is old news, but I've just seen that the new home of Later with Jools will be Maidstone Studios, not Elstree.

Indeed, Mark Cooper was quoted in Broadcast as saying they decided it was the most convenient for the acts. Of course just because the TVC studio management is at Elstree, doesn't mean every in-house BBC production has to be done there - like how Top of the Pops did its Christmas show at Riverside a few years back.

Yep - and the Later team were very happy with the sound desk in the studio at Maidstone - which is a major issue for a live music show.

There are still broadcast services running through the building till the end of the year, so I'd still not be comfortable putting them online.
That said, there were never really many good plans of the building - it was either a choice of the not-very-detailed one from security, showing where the fire assembly points were; or the (very restricted unless you knew where to look) AutoCAD surveyors' drawings showing every single nook and cranny.

It looks like The One Show might be live from TVC tonight in advance of the Madness gig, which will be live from the horseshoe car park. It looks like the stage has been set up to have a nice view of TC1's wall as the backdrop.

also, TVC T-shirts, anyone?

Anyone any idea about this mysterious 'bunker'?

Does anyone have any clips of TVC that I have vivid memories of but haven't seen since their original broadcast.

The 90's programme 'How Did They Do That?' always had a dramatic grand finale based around Television Centre, and then would tell you how they achieved the special effects on the first episode of the new series.

I seem to recall Eamonn Holmes falling off the roof of Studio 1 and clinging on to the Television Centre sign. And when their studio became completely engulfed in water. I'd love to see them again as it shown TVC in a completely new light, though inevitably compared to today's standards it'll probably look naff.

You've just reminded me of "A Day In The Life of Television". A couple of snippets used to be on TV World but I've never seen it in full. Sounds like a great watch too.
