Is the money the that BBC News are paying for TC7 not just going back into the BBC?

you are aware this is how big companies work aren't you?

So what is the problem with having TC7 since they're getting the money back anyway?

It's no longer part of the news budget.

There was always a division between News and the rest of TVC, Main Block. They ran as separate entities. For bigger news programmes, news did not own a large enough studio, so leased one of the main block ones on a long term basis.(TC7 since 1997, TC2 before this), The more programmes they did, made the studio more cost effective. Breakfast, Working Lunch, Hardtalk, Newsround, The Six, The 8 summary, The Ten<for a while>, Newsnight, Newsnight Review, Sportsround, Marr, Politics Show all made TC7 a very cost effective studio. It also was the venue for a few one off specials.
However cost effective News made the studio, they still had to pay an internal fee for it as effectively the studio could not be used by other programmes (BBC or other) who often hire out studio space for days at a time. Its all internal budgets.

One of the advantages of W1 and NBH is that news will have their own large studio

Presumably for Newsround and Sportsround BBC News made some kind of chargeback to Children's?

I posted this video in the BBC World News thread, but feel it would also fit here. This is the new promo airing on BBC World for their move to NBH. Alas I couldn't capture the real audio so have replaced it, as it happens the Olympic mix fits rather well...

Also, the Olympic mix wasn't an entirely new mix by David Lowe. It is a modified version of the 60 second countdown with no building strings.

Nothing in that trail shows that the studio is 100 ft below ground level. Rolling Eyes

Why should it? Not sure what you're getting at.

I'm not sure whether or not the moderators were wishing to make you look a fool by deleting my first reply, but I believe that Generic is being sarcastic.

I was. The studio may look fine although its cellar like environment is nothing like the upper floors of NBH looks.

Thanks for sharing the video, it looks really good up and running and the 'Olympic mix' had completely passed me by so thanks for drawing my attention to it.

As for the earlier comments on what happens when the newsroom tech needs updating, you would hope that the new buildings have more flexibility for that built in. After all space is built into floors for new cables and connections etc and the fact that all the news gathering areas are in new buildings (be it NBH for BBC News or MediaCity for Sport and 5 Live) should mean that this is the same for all. If you consider the World Service were inhabiting an old building with less chance of adaptation, the move should make introduction of new technology more streamlined.
