Yes indeed. It was a shocking operation back in 2002 and some stations still haven't fully recovered from the trauma inflicted. Laughing Sky News would just drop the obit stuff on IRN 1 and the normal news would be on IRN 2 so its much easier now than back then.


Oh yeah... If I remember right, IRN forgot to hit the obit alert button, so the radio stations that weren't watching a TV in the studio didn't know about the Queen Mum's death until after they played their top of the hour news jingles. Was very messy, and yet it was the colour of Peter Sissons' tie that got all the headlines...

Yeah no obit warnings were given so it was only when the news was broadcast. Stations were playing normal music and going about their broadcasting. This was also before there was any sort of Newsroom for IRN so it was literally a telly on the news or just waiting for the news stream if the obit wasn't activated.

Well at the moment IRN can't even get the bulletins to go out on time, so I hate to imagine how they'd deal with this.

That was David Fitzgerald on South Hams Radio, and that was on the occasion of a 2 minute silence at 11am being replaced by a bulletin, and Fitz let rip.

BBC World led with the Philip story this morning, and also revisited Sandringham and Papworth at ten past the hour for live two ways with Colette Hume and Jenny Hill.

Unusual for World to lead with this story, especially when they didn't yesterday.

Apparently the Obit Alarm at IRN HQ consists of two buttons located under two spring-loaded covers, both of which have to be pressed in order to activate the alarm. On the night of the Queen Mother's death only one of the two buttons was pressed, hence the resultant mess news-wise.

It would be the dark blue colour of the Christmas package, thank goodness. I'd hope for the teal version normally, as that's the channel's proper colour and the trailer endboard's most sombre shade (the one they should be using for advertising serious programmes like Newsnight). BBC1 would have a Rudolph jumper backdrop though (like on the trailer endboard), so theirs isn't appropriate and I would hope for a non-Christmas plain red slide.
