In fairness, Digital UK is a body owned by ALL the PSB broadcasters... so it's not a BBC thing.

I think I'm correct in saying there's a technical reason for co-ordinating switchover according to the old ITV regions - or at least doing all the main transmitters in a particular area within a few weeks of each other. But that's quite different from whether or not it was the right way to communicate dates to the public.

There's one technical reason to consider. In most regions, the secondary main transmitters often have at least one of the channels fed by the off air signal from the primary main in that area.

For instance, in my part of the world, Hannington and Midhurst source their feeds of analogue BBC1, 2 and C4 by off air reception of Rowridge. So that affects the sequencing of switchover within a region. Of course, if Rowridge had to switch before the other two, it's not impossible to provide those transmitters with an alternative feed from satellite for instance, so it's not that 'hard and fast'

I think the other resaon is to minimise confusion in overlap areas. Although an major overlap exists between Emley (going this month) and Bilsdale (going next autumn) different regions of course, but it'll be interesting to see how much confusion there is !

well I still call it YTV but then again I don't watch much of it these days, as its all generic and poop factor these days.

There have been so many different names for the channel down here (Westward, TSW, Westcountry, Carlton) that many people either use an old name or simply refer to it as 'Channel 3' because of its location on the TV guide rather than any reference to the legal name of the network.

We were one of the first regions to go fully digital on terrerstrial (more than 2 years ago), so perhaps that has encouraged the use of the name 'Channel 3' when so many other channels became generally available.

I don't think I know anyone who doesn't just call it "ITV" these days - though I live in London and the South East. I've not heard it referred to as Carlton, LWT or Meridian for ages, nor do I hear people use "ITV1" that often.

The only time I hear people use "ITV1" is when they are ensuring people don't think they are referring to ITV2-4, so it could be "I'm surprised they haven't moved that show from ITV1 to ITV2", otherwise it was "Did you watch ITV last night?" or "I see they've changed the line-up for ITV on Saturdays"

I was talking with some friends at the weekend who used to live in Devon (20+ years ago)
They referred to something they'd heard on the local radio last week while down there visiting,
and said it was on 'DevonAir'.

I pointed out that DevonAir closed almost 20 years ago, (it was replaced by Gemini FM, and that re-branded to Heart FM a couple of years ago)

"Oh, ah, it's the station with Judi Spiers on it ?" They said, Well, that's BBC Radio Devon then !!!!

By the way, they also referred to Judi Spiers as being on 'Westcountry' TV back in the 70s and 80s. Wrong again of course. Wink Wink

When I'm at home in Norfolk, I often hear people refer to it as Anglia rather than ITV, and never channel 3. I guess it might be similar in the regions which never changed name, whereas those which have had several names in the past are more quickly forgotten.

Yep - when I lived and worked in Norwich - people often referred to ITV as "Anglia" (I wonder if it was because people often passed the HQ, Anglia have been the only holders of the franchise, and they had a strong regional identity)

But they often called "Look East" "About Anglia" or "Anglia News"...

Indeed, I often here people mention Anglia Tonight as 'About Anglia', and also, Anglia in general, instead of ITV1.

And, also, Radio Orwell, instead of what, I think, is now Heart FM.

Tyne Tees or ITV in equal measure. Advertisements still carry "Not in [ITV Region]" where applicable too.

No referrals to Channel 3 North East though. How soon we forget. Crying or Very sad

Here it's ITV1, maybe ITV Granada.

It's quite strange listening to discussions on the radio/tv etc name checking the likes of Belmont as if everyone is aware of the names of the transmitters. I bet the number of people who are aware of Belmont and Olivers Mount has increased massively in the last few months. (Many people would already be aware of Emley Moor)

I think most people round here know that telly comes from Sutton Coldfield, but few realise there's the odd relay here and there.

We have big Digital UK posters all over the Midlands at the moment telling us to retune on 7th September. That's no use to people who are actually pointing to other transmitters (for some reason my communal aerial gets Waltham)

There are also adverts for Sky with "Central" in big letters, in an addressing manner. That might be fine in London, Anglia, Yorkshire, West, Wales, Westcountry, Tyne Tees and Border, but seems strange here (and I imagine in Granada and Meridian regions) - Midlands would have been better.

Occasionally the gets referred to here as Central, but I'd say more often as ITV especially by anyone under 30 as it's been a good 12 years (tomorrow) since it became Carlton. Central News is probably better known as a programme (but not as well known as Midlands Today).

Granada Tonight was always called Granada Reports whenever I heard anyone talking about it. Eventually, they saw sense and realised what a great brand name they'd abandoned. So they went back.

I guess the same thing happened when News West reverted to Points West.

I still hear references to Look North West or Look North - some 27 years since it changed its name to North West Tonight.
