Hi,

Could someone please confirm at what times the Channel Islands, Look East (West) and Oxford actually transmit their sub-opts and for roughly how long? Do all three also have their own evening and weekend bulletins as well?

Many thanks.

BBC Channel Islands News don't do bulletins for Breakfast, or a weekday lunchtime version unless something has happened of particular importance to the islands. They normally just take Spotlight from Plymouth.

On weekday evenings they get an opt-out for the first 10 mins, sometimes longer, again only if something important has happened. It seems to be quite flexible. They also produce their own full bulletin after the Ten (Mon-Fri).

At weekends there is no opt-out from Plymouth, even for The Politics Show , despite not being part of the UK. I'm not sure how relevant the Westminster government is to the Islands.

BBC Cambridge opts-out for somewhere between 6'30" and 8'00" at 1835-40ish during Look East for a Close-Up bulletin, and is fully split at 2225 after the Ten O'Clock News. There aren't usually any opt-outs during Breakfast (though the region DID split fully during the 1997 Election Breakfast show less than 6 months after the sub-opt launched), Lunchtime, Daytime or at the weekend.

The Norwich main presenters often (usually?) pre-record a separate version of the pre-recorded headlines for Cambridge to opt-out with at the top of the 1830 opt to ensure a story in the sub-opt is included, with Cambridge opting back after the opening headlines for the Norwich presenters to do the first (and often second) main stories pan-regionally, with the Norwich presenters (or a location reporter) doing a tease for something later in the programmes "after more news where you are" or similar. At that point Cambridge run a sting, and opt-out (but I think Norwich don't run a sting, they just continue as if nothing has happened). Cambridge then opt-back into Norwich on a "Still to come" sting I think.

Another neat trick they sometimes do is to run split VTs (for sports and local listings). The Norwich presenters will read a link that is suitably generic like "Here's all of the weekend's sport action", but Cambridge will then opt-out and play content from the Beds/Bucks/Herts/Cambs/Northants bit of the patch, and Norwich will play content from Norfolk/Suffolk/Essex bit of the patch.

They used to also opt-out for local radio trails - so viewers in the East only saw trails for their stations and viewers in the West only saw trails for their stations. (So people in Northampton didn't get BBC Essex trails, and viewers in Norwich didn't get trails for 3CR)

Oxford do the 3pm bulletin Monday-Friday. On Mondays, they do 13'00 at 6.30pm. Tuesdays-Thursdays it's 10'00. Fridays they do the full opt of 27'45". They also split for the 8pm opt and the 2225 opt. There's no split output at Breakfast, Lunchtimes, Weekends or Bank Holidays. Occasionally there are split trails. The Oxford transmitter goes through DSO this September (Hannington and Rowridge are next year I believe) so there may well be more opting later in the year. Oxford do their own 1800 and 1815 opts and their own symbol namechecking "BBC South from Oxford" at 1759:50 and 21:59:50.

Norwich do run a sting. The opt on both sides used to be titled at Look East Close Up. This was dropped in the latest refresh I think. It is also increasingly less common for the Norwich presenters to now say now the news for Norwich, Suffolk and Essex.

Look East do play around with the opt. They have been known to do entire split shows before - but with it seemingly presented in the same manner so Norwich, opt to Cambridge then back to Norwich.

The 8pm summary is separately presented by both Norwich and Cambridge to their respective areas.

Oxford do the 3pm bulletin Monday-Friday. On Mondays, they do 13'00 at 6.30pm. Tuesdays-Thursdays it's 10'00. Fridays they do the full opt of 27'45".

How come the different lengths on different days. Is it down to sports coverage?

Yes, precisely. Monday's goals and other sports coverage. Plus a catch up on some of the weekend's news.

Never having been in a region with an opt-out, this is probably a very stupid question, but I'm assuming these opt-outs have their own presenters and some kind of studio (basic CSO I'm guessing), or are the opt-outs actually from the same building as the main show?

With the example above if they do a full show on a Friday and nearly half on other nights, you have to wonder if the leap to being a full region in their own right with their own show would be that expensive. They could still fill the show with reports from the bigger region, but essentially host it all themselves.

The Cambridge opt out has its own studios which recently merged with BBC local radio services. (So with it all under one roof makes it better for News gathering and as they said when the reported the move, they only have to send one person to cover BBC Radio, TV & Online then sending 3 people)

It has always had its own studio from my knowledge from Cambridge. Yes they have a separate set of presenters sometimes used in Norwich for reporting and occasionally for presenting. Cambridge did do a full programme I believe in December, someone did note it on here in the Look East thread. Stuart from Norwich went over there for that edition, not sure the reason why.

I think they could manage to do full bulletins and perhaps let Norwich cover for them at weekends. But then other regions may be able to justify opt outs and it would get silly.

BBC Channel Islands have their own presenters and studio in Jersey. Originally it was just a converted office in a building by the main transmitter, but it's since been relocated to Radio Jersey's building in St Helier.

The opt started I believe as watchingtv says in converted office space in the old BBC Cambridge offices. More recently it moved into purpose built offices. You can see the studio here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cambridgeshire/content/panoramas/look_east_studio_360.shtml

I'm not sure there would be a massive benefit to separating the two programmes fully. I could however see a benefit to more frequently splitting the opening of the programme so they run separate leading stories and come back together for the weather and the more magazine parts of the programme.

There could also be a benefit to running split sport at the weekends but I would imagine the short duration of the bulletins might make this harder to achieve.
