Currently and since I started watching around 40 mins ago. Channel are showing Channel Nightscreen and not CITV with the rest of the ITV network.
With Nightscreen coming from London (South Bank?) I believe I am surprised that if the link to Meridian is down they are not able to use a signal from Satellite like BBC do.
EDIT: As I hit submit it comes back on. Strange problem to have though.
Channel has always been responsible for putting GMTV to air, so if there's a problem at Channel it will affect GMTV.
I wonder if they still use Meridian as their network feed. Given they now broadcast in widescreen and have some sort of link with the mainland for the satellite uplink, I would have thought they get the main network feed instead now.
AIUI Channel have a fibre from London to Jersey to provide their network feed, rather than relying on an off-air analogue feed - hence the 16:9 content. I believe they also have a feed the other way to get their feed back to the mainland for uplink to DSat etc.
However as Channel don't historically run a 24/7 pres operation AND have an advertising revenue deal with the Meridian franchise holder - I think they take a dirty feed of Meridian rather than assembling their own pres from the network feed(s) - and they may only have a single feed, or possibly two?
I guess it is possible that ITV Playout now create a separate Channel feed for them though?
Who would pay for The Zone opt-out? Would ITV Network pay since they are scheduling content not allowed in the Channel Islands and therefore forcing Channel TV to opt-out? Or is it tough luck for Channel?
Channel isn't showing The Zone because Challenge Jackpot services aren't available to Channel Islands residents.
The same is also true for Northern Ireland, although having said that, according to the listings, UTV now seem to be showing The Zone one day a week on Mondays, and yet their viewers can't take part in the Challenge Jackpot section of the programme.
Channel isn't showing The Zone because Challenge Jackpot services aren't available to Channel Islands residents.
But do you know if that's because of a decision made by Challenge Jackpot of their own accord or because of a legal restriction imposed by The States?
I think it's because Challenge Jackpot only provides their services to Great Britain, as stated in their terms and conditions:
Quote:
3.2. You must be a resident of Great Britain to register and play on the Service(s). If You are resident anywhere else (including but not limited to Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands), You cannot play on the Service(s). If You are in the United States of America, Malta, Turkey, Portugal or some other countries it is also illegal for You to register and play on the Service(s). You should be aware that the countries mentioned within this clause do not form an exhaustive list and are subject to change at any time.
Errrrrrrr, yes, I think we're both on the same wavelength here.
But I'm still interested to know whether the chicken or the egg came first.
Do the Challenge Jackpot terms and conditions exclude the Channel Islands just because Challenge Jackpot decided that was the way they wanted it to be; or are the terms and conditions driven by laws passed by The States of Jersey and/or Guernsey making it illegal for them to operate in the island(s)?
The terms mention it being illegal to sign up in some other countries, so I'm interested in what the case is in the Channel Islands.
Perhaps Mr Stabby, or one of our other island correspondents, knows the answer.
I can't claim to know why The Zone services aren't available to Channel Islands residents, however Netplay do actually have studio premises in Guernsey (i believe on the same site as other Channel TV premises) and operate under Alderney gaming license because of the relaxed gambling laws in Alderney. So they're at least very much based in the Channel Islands.
I wonder if it's the case of a deal not being made with Channel TV themselves rather than any State reason. If it was the decision of the States, i'm sure it would have been allowed many moons ago, knowing their nature. It would explain why Northern Ireland don't show it fully, but other offshore UK regions like the Isle of Man do. Perhaps they only did a deal with ITV PLC. The Channel Islands don't have ITV HD for a similar reason.
