This bit is quite ironic that they should do this on the day of a UK election...RTÉ's own rules prohibt them from doing this on the day of an Irish general election! From midnight on the day before polling day through to when the count begins, RTÉ is not allowed to broadcast any coverage of any political issues due to its self-imposed "moratorium". The only thing they are allowed broadcast in this line is the usual pictures of the leaders entering their polling stations and putting their ballot paper in the ballot box. So there is no Prime Time on the night of an Irish general election and coverage doesn't begin till mid morning the next day, cause we don't do overnight counts (although political news will reappear from 9am or so onwards).

You are aware that the Republic of Ireland is a separate country from the UK and therefore, election rules for UK media doesn't apply to us.

Er, I was talking about the election rules for the IRISH media!!!!! Never mentioned the UK rules once.
Trying to point out that RTÉ would not be allowed run a Prime Time special on the night of an Irish GE, least not before the polls had closed at any rate.

What point would there by in a Prime Time Special on the night of the election if the count doesn't take place until the next day.

RTE carry out an exit poll and it's embargoed for Morning Ireland on the morning of the count. Each country has their own way of doing these things, they're not always the same.

I'm sure rdd is fully aware that UK rules don't apply to Ireland, that the systems are completely different and that there would be no point in RTÉ running a Prime Time on an Irish election night. Indeed that was the whole point of his post, which basically stated "huh, that's interesting". Why do you keep jumping down his throat?

Also, if you are going to go down the road of being hypersensitive about Irish independence, please be aware that our nation is called Ireland. All this "Republic of" stuff is quite a British way to refer to the country.

Ummmm, going totally off topic, but aren't we called The Republic Of Ireland? Ireland is an Island, made up of two parts, The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. There is no nation called Ireland....I live in Eire, the ROI, not Ireland.....

Nope, it's just Ireland. Republic of Ireland, ROI and Eire were all names traditionally used by the UK government, which refused to acknowledge Ireland as the name of the state until around the time of the Good Friday Agreement. Of course Republic of Ireland is a perfectly valid description of the country, it's just that breakingnews was annoying me and his using that term seemed at odds with his eagerness to point out (completely unnecessarily) the independence of the country from the UK. As you say, it's completely off topic and I'm sorry for dragging it out.

Ya learn something new everyday. I assumed our official title was the Republic of Ireland but the 1937 constitution hasn't been altered, so therefore we are still known as Ireland! I was merely saying the Republic to point out the difference between North and South, but anyway!

Newstalk providing coverage from 10 o'clock tonight and Radio One has an extended Late Debate.

I was very much mistaken earlier - RTE are indeed using TC5's studio floor for part of their election programme. And having had a little glimpse of it, it looks rather good.

TC5 as in BBC Sport's studio?

Prime Time is apparently only going to cover the UK election after ten at any rate - there is apparently a landmark interview with Brian Cowan to mark two years in power before that.

RTE love in no doubt. They must be reflecting on the exit polls at 10 and that's it.

Very impressed with the London studio, set and camera work. Would RTE have built the set or BBC? One of these days RTE will be able to built something like this back in Dublin 4.
