Yes, but they don't really broadcast as much anymore either... Not since Red Bee's creation.

Why do I get the feeling this so-called "custom font" is so close to one that's already in the public domain. A strange hybrid of Corinthian and Johnston Underground spring to mind. Remember, the BBC can only do this because of the unique way they are funded. By us.

Carry on with the ideas, we're listening...

The organisation is called the BRITISH Broadcasting Corporation, and the dancers were so obsessed with inclusivity they seemed to lose sight of this.

Are you ever positive about anything that isn't remotely retro?

I must say I am pleasantly surprised by all this so far; those endboards are fairly BBC Four-esque. I'm a little wary about the Sky One-ish logo, it's very un-BBC, isn't it? In fact, the ident is very un-BBC One. However, it appears they have made a point of starting from square one, and I really look forward to seeing the end result.

And that has what exactly to do with the point I was making?

I don't want to keep making criticisms, but it isn't the most distinctive font in the world is it? Maybe that's the idea, but Fontsmith's work for the C4 channels really stand out in a way that ITV1 and BBC1's new fonts don't. Is using a mainstream/public font more expensive or something?

If the dancer idents had featured only local British folk dancing or whatever, who's to say the end result would have been any less twee, cliched and embarrassing then the dancer idents we ended up with.

To be quite honest Simon, I can envision your idea of the dancer idents as being nothing less then mortifying.

Edit: Dammit Noel, learn to proof read BEFORE submitting.

I'm still hoping they ditch the plain red 'endboard' (i know that's the wrong technical term) for the trailers- I think that part of the current pres package is weak.

The faint circles on those posts also look a little too much like BBC Local News intros...and therefore very cheap.

One thing that I was wondering about is whether or not they will be using stings based on the new idents. The balloon era was "richer" for the variety of stings and the dancer era somewhat weaker. Stings would be great for the channel based on the circles idea.

For a custom made font it does seem very familiar likke I've spotted it on something already. Channel 4's on the other hand is one that does come across as something different.

Maybe that's the idea, to have BBC1's font seem familiar even though it isn't.

Picking up on the British thing, are the Union Jack idents still airing on BBC America?

The dance idents were embarrassing full stop, and were always going to be cliched whether they featured Maasai warriors, majorettes or morris men.

But then, I would never have commissioned them.

Perhaps this is the point I was edging towards... you wouldn't commission anything. Nothing would change. Change bad. All things new bad. Even before they have aired, they are bad. Go back. Go back.

Etc.

You are a template.

The first couple of months of the dancers were fine. I wanted to see a refresh of BBC One at the time of the dancers launch. However, after a couple of months the dancers became dull and uninteresting. The refresh should have included the balloon but perhaps on a more unintrusive manner. The BBC One Box logo could have been intergrated into new balloon footage and the font refreshed too. The new idents are way superior to the dancers and now I've seen them on the youtube website, I think they're lovely. I certainly wont tire of them like I did the dancers. The hippos are devine!!!
