Can't help with the downloads I'm afraid, but if you go to this point of the Five Live website (click here), and scroll down to the bottom, you can hear the first 90 odd seconds of five live from 5am March 28th 1994. Jane Garvey is the first voice of the station, with Morning Reports....her now husband Adrian Chiles introduces Wake up to Money (so little has changed with the format in 10 years!). But anyway, that includes a fairly long section of the old fantastic theme tune- I would love to here some kind of remix of the old tune and the new one from 28th March, but we may not get any change for a while.

That jingle goes on for quite a while, was that used at every top of the hour?

Quite amusing that one of the sports headlines is that Michael Schumacher has won the 1st Grand Prix of the season, something he did today!

It was the same as the current jingle, in that the presenters/guests would talk over a shorter version of the launch clip up to the top of the hour- it would kick in about 30 seconds before TOTH. But it would give a good indication of the proximity of the news when it appeared (i.e. telling the guests to shut up and let the presenter close the hour properly). I really love that old tune, even more than the current one, which is why I propose some kind of remix of the two.

Re: Schumacher- yep so little has changed in 10 years! Notice he was also introduced as the "german Michael Schumacher"- I think he was just starting out then, as the german bit would never be mentionned today.

Original Five Live package was fantastic - was never the same when they remixed it. Current one really doesn't have the same impact! Bring back "On 909 and 693 medium wave, this is Five Live...news and sport from the BBC"

It did, you know. Might even get me into a 'clique' if I keep at it, eh?

Thanks for the responses - I'm scratching my head at who that is reading the sports headlines. Unlike Mr & Mrs Garvey (or Chiles), the modest man doesn't give his name. I'm sure we still hear him on the station. Simon Mann perhaps?

I've been thinking about doing a mock along those lines for a while, maybe the News 24 countdown with "live news, live sport this is 5 Live from the BBC" over the last 5 seconds, then into the headline bed, brand 5 Live as the radio equivalent of News 24.

No, Five Live is not the radio version of News 24. Think about it.

They've also never been one for integration with the rest of the BBC News output. As C@t pointed out a few days ago, one of the best things the corporation ever did was let the station go its own way.

Five Live is not part of BBC News. There is no reason for it to be integrated. It's a radio station in its own right, with its own branding.

The Five Live music's OK i think, i heard the long version the other day wondering why they don't use it every top of the hour. The awful jingles on talkSPORT could do with a refresh though.

The 'long' version is only used at the top of an hour that continues into a long menu, or handing over from one programme to another. It's also a very handy way of flip flopping to the next studio.

I think Peter Allen of Five Live Drive was a News 24 regular at the launch, was he not?

No.

Yep studio output is (and hence all platforms are) definitely mono.

Studio output is actually stereo, but everything is mono apart from trails, jingles and the up to the hour music.

However, it's broadcast on every platform in mono...even DSAT,

He was actually, on a Sunday afternoon.

Well I never knew that.

A shame that the 10th birthday passed with little more than a mention, and, more to the point, no relaunch to get rid of that dull signature tune and practically non-existent package they have these days that has long outlived its welcome (IMHO).

Ah, the first moments of Five Live. I have that, along with the last night of Radio 5, on tape somewhere (not sure where though!). If I remember right (not having heard that clip on the website yet) the top story was a tornado or something going through a church in America.

At midnight, after Radio 5 finished, but before Five Live started in the morning, there was 15mins of "BBC News broadcasting on 909 and 693MW" or something like that.

And yes, the original music was the best they've had, no doubt about it.
