Ah, the first moments of Five Live. I have that, along with the last night of Radio 5, on tape somewhere (not sure where though!). If I remember right (not having heard that clip on the website yet) the top story was a tornado or something going through a church in America.

At midnight, after Radio 5 finished, but before Five Live started in the morning, there was 15mins of "BBC News broadcasting on 909 and 693MW" or something like that.

And yes, the original music was the best they've had, no doubt about it.

Yes the last voice of the old Radio 5 was Ricky Salmon (who can now be heard reading the news on Radio 2). Then at around 0445 there was a 15 minute montage of clips and 5 Live music which was put together from the pilot broadcasts that they had been doing. Then it was Jane, Marcus and Adrian with Morning Reports at 0500. The up to the hour music was known as the 59.06 as that's when you had to start playing it for it to finish on the top of the hour. Happy memories.

A shame that the 10th birthday passed with little more than a mention, and, more to the point, no relaunch to get rid of that dull signature tune and practically non-existent package they have these days that has long outlived its welcome (IMHO).

Little more than a mention? They've found dozens of kids who were born on the same day as Five Live, (the 'Five Live Generation') and have been doing programme features on a survey of them for weeks.

When was the actual 10th birthday? I thought it was later in the year?

<EDIT>

Just looked it up - "Radio5 Live sprang into life on 28 March 1994". They have been having loads of adverts for Five Live on TV, I suppose this is part of their birthday celebrations, but it's suprising - if what people say is true - that it wasn't mentioned on air much.

Been looking at their schedule, and apart from a few changes to presenters, the actual programmes have hardly changed in ten years. They obviously got it right first time!

Not quite, he came on after the station closed down at middnight (as Blake says on 'BBC Radio on 909 & 693am'). The last voice was a comedy character.

Yes, I do hope, they get some music soon.

I have hated it since the day it started. I always found the fading in bit quite ominous and a bit manacing. And I'm quite bored and sick of the voice over part.

The version they use at the start of Up All Night is a little better.

I like the music. You should hear it in Wide Stereo!

The up to the hour music works very well for Five Live, ending one hour, or programme, and moving onto the next; which will start dead on the hour. It's also an excellent way of flip-flopping studios.

They still use the normal music up to the hour on Up All Night. The other music is used as a bed for the Menu after the news and sport.

Silly me. I just got one type of bed on my mind at that time of night.

As for wide stereo, is that when you tune one radio to 693 and another to 909 - that's at least a hundred miles apart. Laughing

That's not as I remember it - I am sure that Ricky Salmon read a news bulletin and then said something about a "new network" starting in the morning, then he said goodnight, and played the last Radio 5 jingle.

The comic characters, who were trying to save Radio 5, and failed, were last heard before the last news bulletin, not after.

In answer to an earlier post, when I said the 10th birthday had passed with barely a mention, I meant the day itself - I heard the 'Five Live Generation', though I felt it peetered out a bit, too.

The original 1994-96 music was still by far the best, by the way!

They were heard before the news. They closed the station down just before midnight, then there were pips, then a news and sport bulletin branded 'BBC Radio on 909 and 693 am' . Then Ricky plugged the new network and the station went off air until later in the morning

So before Midnight it was 'Radio 5' afetr midnight it was 'BBC Radio on 909 and 693 am' and then from 5am it was '5 Live'
