I would've said surely the public can cope with a mere mention of his name, but then of course they just edited last week's episode for that! There's an episode in 1992 where RH and JS are mentioned in some sort of mock chart countdown for a charity phone-in type thing, can't remember the details..

If he's found guilty of anything, R. Kelly will be an interesting one when we get to 1997 as he had a number 1 for a few weeks. They'd surely have to skip those? And three GG-presented episodes before then too.

But whatever.. so long as they continue with the run until at least the end of the 90s I'm not too worried about a few cuts or skips.

There's a couple of 1994 episodes which have archive TOTP performances by Glitter for the playout slot as well, so I imagine in those cases they'll just cut the final minute or so off, and create a mockup of the credits to be placed over the number one song's video or performance.

And while I wouldn't be too certain about R. Kelly getting shown again, especially if he is found guilty in court, so far they've only usually seemed to edit or skip over shows with problematic figures if there are links to Operation Yewtree, with the exception of Mike Smith of course. If MJ's videos had been edited out by now I'd be less inclined to think he might get on, but we'll see on that I suppose.

How is the chart countdown handled if someone on the “disgraced list” features? I can understand a performance/video being censored/removed, but the fact they had a single in the charts is an historic fact. Sorry if this has been answered above.

The chart countdowns are seemingly unaffected. Gary Glitter still featured in the chart sections during the 1984 episodes.

I do believe they edited out a photo of him that appeared during one of Tracey Ullman's videos from around that time, although it would naturally be much more obvious if the chart rundown inexplicably missed a song out.

If banning songs because of their assosiation with someone notorious was done, imagine how much 60s and 70s music we'd lose because of Phil Spector. The entire Let It Be album from the Beatles for a start.

A good chunk of 80s pop music too, for that matter - Steven Jolley, of the Jolley & Swain production team who were responsible for many of Imagination, Bananarama, and Spandau Ballet's hits, among others, was later convicted over sex offences involving children. Not a nice topic, but once you do start going down that particular rabbit hole it never really ends.

That would be a good thing, as Phil Spector’s mixes are by far the worst of the mixes available for those songs. IMO.

Greatly looking forward to the remixed All Things Must Pass for the same reason.

No axe upcoming for 'Mona'.

A good job as well, as if there was, we'd end up skipping the July 95 edition McLachlan hosted in addition to not seeing his other three 1990 appearances as a performer/on video.

MJ has never been found guilty of anything though, and most of the general public seem to be split between not believing the accusers or argue that his music is too good to cancel. The Leaving Neverland film damaged his reputation but not as much as it could've done.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see with regards to R. Kelly.

Not being found guilty would also apply to a certain Leeds based DJ / presenter too though?

Can’t believe Craig McLachlan was hosting TOTP as late as 1995! Not that the show was ever especially cutting edge, but he would have been extremely not current in the summer of Britpop

Some of the guest host choices in that era are somewhat strange in retrospect - even Julian Cope did it, and although he was really great value I wonder who on the TOTP team persuaded him to:

Well it was Ric Blaxill's idea wasn't it? "The 30 seconds between the acts should be as unpredictable as the acts themselves."

Of course, older viewers disagreed and turned over to Emmerdale.

OK technically that's true, but you'd have to concede that there's a huge difference in the public opinion of the two.

It wasn't that bad a booking, because he'd just appeared in the first series of Bugs which was a big show in its day.

December 1996 isn't looking too good. 2 weeks after Gary Glitter presented, Shaun Ryder presented, wearing a Savile wig and glasses and describing himself as "Junior Jimmy" after Dunblane Children's Choir performed their No.1 single in the studio. Ouch.
Night Thoughts, AcerBen and DE88 gave kudos
