I wonder why they couldn't have just removed the link and gone straight from one to the other? They've done that a couple of times before to remove Jonathan King.

At the end of the day, it was easier for them to just entirely edit out a mostly forgotten Lisa Stansfield single, which was only on for a couple of minutes anyway, and then make up for the lost time by running the Depeche Mode playout to the very end.

In any case, I noticed a link to a BBC VT file of it was posted on Twitter, albeit with the audio mixed down to mono:

Yes, and it's probably more difficult to edit round the whizzy transitions we see these days between the links and the videos. For example the likely reason for the Jive Bunny video at Christmas being edited in a different place in vision to where it was in audio was so as to retain the original transition back to the studio.

I was thinking that too - the instance I believe James was talking about involving JK was 17/01/1985, where there was a straight cut from Amii Stewart's performance to Smiley Culture's, as he introduced the latter after his US Charts feature. No transitions or camera pans were involved in his intro link, so that was a simple enough edit for them to make.

If they do get up to February 1993, I wonder how they'll deal with Rolf Harris' appearance doing Stairway To Heaven; it's on between the Breakers and a Charles & Eddie performance, so removing that shouldn't be too difficult, but from memory Tony Dortie also spoilers him in his link out of Saint Etienne and into Annie Lennox's video, which might be a bit harder to work around.

I would've said surely the public can cope with a mere mention of his name, but then of course they just edited last week's episode for that! There's an episode in 1992 where RH and JS are mentioned in some sort of mock chart countdown for a charity phone-in type thing, can't remember the details..

If he's found guilty of anything, R. Kelly will be an interesting one when we get to 1997 as he had a number 1 for a few weeks. They'd surely have to skip those? And three GG-presented episodes before then too.

But whatever.. so long as they continue with the run until at least the end of the 90s I'm not too worried about a few cuts or skips.

And then of course, you have the Lostprophets in the early 2000's - who have seven appearances in 2004!

How is the chart countdown handled if someone on the “disgraced list” features? I can understand a performance/video being censored/removed, but the fact they had a single in the charts is an historic fact. Sorry if this has been answered above.

The chart countdowns are seemingly unaffected. Gary Glitter still featured in the chart sections during the 1984 episodes.

I imagine we'll get plenty of R Kelly cuts from 1994 onwards; I think mainly videos, the only performance I can think off the top of my head is 'Bump 'n' Grind' from January 1995.

That was billed as an exclusive mix too, so most likely Bruno Brookes' links may be edited too.

Certainly, the two number ones were never performed in the studio or via satellite, but given their chart position, they'll skip over those.

He also wrote a number of songs for other artists, which may get cut as well.

Possibly not, as long as there's no mention of his involvement in the song within the surrounding links - the main song this would affect would be 'You Are Not Alone' by Michael Jackson.

Another artist who springs to mind is Aaliyah, yet thankfully, her only performance was a 'satellite' for the excellent 'Try Again', recorded and released long after her association with R. Kelly.

I'd do a more thorough search now, but sadly, the TOTP performers index on Popscene is down at present.

If banning songs because of their assosiation with someone notorious was done, imagine how much 60s and 70s music we'd lose because of Phil Spector. The entire Let It Be album from the Beatles for a start.
rdobbie, DE88 and Ghost gave kudos
