There was a great theory at the time that the channel was a front for the Raelian cult, but it turned out it was because their website was on webspace owned by someone who happened to be a member. Heady days.

GOLD probably less valuable as a pay TV channel now BritBox has entered the market. Not sure if there is much duplication of content but the sort of shows on GOLD are what I'd expect to be on BritBox. Do the UKTV channels promote BritBox at all considering BBC Studios involvement in both?

ISTR it was meant to be Bloombert + Free Sport with a ton of nothingness inbetween

After looking throughout the web trying to find anything else to base this off of, this tweet is the only thing claiming that Gold's coming to Freeview. I even searched "gold coming to freeview" and this thread is the top search result, and the "People also ask" thing is right under it on Google; It's also not on Google's news.

I mean, it’s linking to the new Ofcom channel license which I’d think is a pretty good source...

Mistakes happen (basically the speculation in the thread is far from what's reality)

I was sceptical when I saw the tweet last night, and that seems to be the only place that has noticed it. However looking at the Ofcom website it is there in the list of DTT licensees as well as the cable/satellite list:

Everything else is speculation

That Twitter feed automatically posts when a new Ofcom licence has appeared on that page (and also automatically posts when a channel change has actually occurred on DTT itself).

Ultimately it's clear from the whole CCX process that UKTV intend to launch either a new channel or put one of their four pay channels onto Freeview and given that a licence for Gold has appeared in the last 24 hours on the DTT licence page I'd say it's not unreasonable to suggest that it's highly likely that Gold is going to launch on Freeview.

Now that UKTV is fully owned by BBC Studios, they've probably now got the freedom to put more of their channels as FTA than when they did as a collaboration between the Beeb and more recently Scripps and Discovery.

I think if Gold does turn up on Freeview, this is another way of making the Gold Originals pay their way using advertising revenue as more viewers will be able to see their recent commissions in addition to the archive tv shows from the past. That's what makes it distinctive from the cheap as chips channels that show 80s repeats on a loop like Forces TV.

Does GOLD have that many original commissions anyway? I could name at best 5 from the last few years, if you don’t count the endless talking head clip shows.

Absolutely, just to make it clear that I wasn't be sceptical that it would be. A bit of a scoop for that feed as it doesn't seem to have been announced anywhere
