Seems the BBC isn't paying good salaries for designers, as going freelance was an uncertain path for many designers. At least working for the BBC you have a guaranteed income. Freelance must give him a chance to earn more than the BBC were offering?

Or maybe he’s not motivated solely by money?

More like designers are getting shafted at the BBC, and boring and bland ideas are being forced throw, which many people who have inspiration dont like.
I can imagine his creativity and imagination was restricted at the BBC, and by going freelance he will have more freedom to be as creative as he likes.

Love to know how you're so sure about this. "Some of the designs look crap" is not proof.

I never said, crap, you implied something i never said. I said boring and bland ideas, doesn't make them crap.

What I was asking is how you can be so sure as to state "designers are getting shafted at the BBC", and that they were being "forced" to work with "boring and bland ideas" which they "don't like". I think you're rather obliged to come up with some proof for that - other than your personal dislike of some of the BBC's output - given you are stating it so baldly.
It's worth remembering that the BBC really only have staff designers in News - if you want to work on other genres (Factual, Entertainment, Events, Drama, Comedy etc.), you need to be freelance or working for an external graphics house.
The BBC stopped having an in-house general graphic design operation decades ago.

I said it's
more like
designers are getting shafted at the BBC, That big difference in a statement, I'm rather disappointed your misinterpreted what I have wrote again. So that is twice.
The impression I get is from the Horses mouths ( not james since I have never spoken with his goodsel) , However that is nothing new in this business, it's been going for donkey years.
You can say it may have been a sweeping statement. No one know for sure why james left, Maybe he just wanted to get new outlook and concepts to deal to broaden his horizons and improve his craft.
Now That means the opinion I have picked up is valued, since it come from outside influences. There are problems at the BBC, There are problems at ITV, CH4, and Ch5. I do believe the issue the BBC are causing are self infecting could be resolved quicker if it cleared its mind.
