Also relating to this era, do we have a date for when ITV introduced generic “hearts” end credits? I believe these were updated a couple of times (with the prodcap being full-screen at one point and half-screen at another).

The first episode of The Bill to feature this style of credits was Tues 20th March 2001 (the previous Friday’s episode did not). Were they perhaps introduced on 19th March, or was the roll out staggered? ISTR that Crossroads Mk II, which began on 5th March, had these end credits from the outset.


They were in use as early as September 2000.

They were only used on a few flagship shows at first, like Corrie and Emmerdale, before being rolled out to almost every other show.

There were at least two "revisions" of the hearts credits, the initial rollout (as above) on a couple of key shows (soaps primarily) and then effectively full time (but even then there were exceptions, the news being a key one and anything on the CITV strand) from 2001.

The initial revision used the ugly condensed font for the credits and the endcap was full screen after them, the later revision that appeared from 2002 was half screen end cap on the left while the heart animation continued to run. (some productions used fatter fonts for the credits). It was then ITN News and some of the regions decided to adopt a hearts end credit sequence (though ITN news just used it as an endcap). The hearts credit thing only appeared on ITV(1) and didn't seem to apply at all on the other channels, so you had the slightly odd situation where in the case of Crossroads its airings on the main network were hearts credited but the omnibus edition was only ever aired on ITV2 and used a standard roller. (the later 2003 incarnation did get an ITV1 omnibus which IIRC started on a Sunday and then disappeared into ever increasingly late night slots).

After the October 2002 rebrand all shows in all strands used the then new style but there were still exceptions particularly on CITV, My Parents Are Aliens kept its own credit style until the end but most of the other stuff was in the house style.

Thanks for the additional info.

On that Coronation Street clip, I assume we are hearing the Carlton announcer over the ECP, then a local announcer taking over (I think this is a YTV or TTT recording, so it would be a Leeds announcer being heard across the northern GMG regions. I stand to be corrected there). At this point there was both a local feed and a network feed coming out of LNN (CAR/LWT) with ECPs and some trails and elements of pres on the network feed. It actually worked/sounded better after they took over continuity for all of the Granada and Carlton regions as you stopped hearing two announcers over end-credits (except in Scotland and Northern Ireland who were stuck with the dirty feed for a while!)

Remember production endcaps used to appear after the sponsorship, so that'll be why it didn't appear with the hearts credits initially.

Isn’t that ident basically the same one most of the GMG regions used though? That’s what I meant. I think they were took over in 2000 but playout was partly done by Leeds before this. The ident just looks odd and incomplete compared to the others. I assume even local endcaps didn’t have a logo then.


I expect Border management just thought the chopsticks had had its day and was very dated so they dropped it.

The hearts credits looked really nice, it seemed to sort of somehow fit with the rest of the Carlton package at the time and I wouldn't be surprised if it was inspired by American TV presentation since they'd been doing that sort of thing for a while.

I always felt, as a viewer in the Granada region, that they jarred with the style we were accustomed to. They felt very network / London.

Correct - they used a still of the hearts ident.

Possibly, although it was much less dated than the wheelchair-inspired logo used in Manchester...

When did BBC 2 start using the first coloured ident? Wiki put in a ref to TV room but there never claimed it was2nd december 1967 so once again some one is making up facts.
