For me, RTE's news bulletins aren't over formal but they're not particularly accessible. RTE 2fm could do with news more akin to BBC Radio 1, for example.
But then I reckon the BBC has gone too far the other way, and a bit of opinion is creeping in within the guise of "analysis", so really you can't win with me.
I get the impression he thinks the delivery of BBC News is similarly over-formal. It's not as over-formal as it used to be back when I was a kid, but it's still somewhat on the formal side.
It's modern, while keeping the right level of formality.
Yes, we don't want a Fox News style presentation here. I always remember just one sentence said by their business editor Neil Cavulto back in 2009 which just exposed the bias of that network "President Obama is at it again" - imagine Huw Edwards saying that about Theresa May or one of the RTE News readers saying that about the Taoiseach?
Who said anything about Fox News? Thats not even a news channel. I was thinking more old skoool Sky News. It used to be bit more livelier than BBC. Now its just as sleepy.

Fox News is a news channel whether you like it or not. I personally detest it, but it shows how bad and bias leaning presentation works.
Carla O'Brien has been presenting the lunchtime & afternoon summary today. She will present the 6.1 news very shortly on RTÉ One.
When does RTE begin their slashed season of news for the summer? I know they take an axe to their One O'Clock News, shorten it to 15 minutes, and axe a half hour off the Six One during the summer.
Effectively it’s exactly as you said a few posts up, the One gets cut to an extended summary and the Six One becomes a single headed bulletin that runs for 25 minutes. The Nine is unaffected as are weekend bulletins (there is no Week in Politics, but this is generally a longer break). There’s also been no Prime Time in recent years (though they used to air a single Thursday edition each week in August).
The reason for the cuts is that the courts are closed except for vacation sittings and the Oireachtas (Parliament) is on its summer recess.

RTE must be happy reducing them, as I never recall the BBC or ITV here cutting back their news bulletins over the summer
It turns out I made a mistake about the summer bulletins on the Six One as have begun on RTÉ One this evening.
There was a subtle difference in the presentation of the headlines & the top story for this evening's Six One.
Catriona Perry had stood up on her own at the start to do her intro. After the theme music played out in full; there was a panned camera shot rolling along the studio floor up to the newswall with Catriona reading the main story afterwards. The new camera shot up to the newswall done this evening looked great as I hadn't seen it before.
I have got to ask this though. When Catriona Perry & Keelin Shanley were given the new roles in Six One; why couldn't they use those opening camera shots from day 1 when they began presenting their hour long bulletins? It would have made a nice change to the previous opening shots when Bryan Dobson & Sharon Ni Bheolain were the main presenters.
Will they use a new shot with Catriona when they get their new studio in a few months time?
What an odd day to start the shorter bulletins , why the 2nd of August why not the 1st ?
I presume it's because somebody is going on leave today rather than from Friday

Yes it's a long time ago now but people seem to forget the BBC's soft news programme , Nationwide , took a break and of course Newsnight a few years ago ran a shorter programme
