Sky Movies Rebrand To Sky Cinema

On July 8th, Sky Movies will rebrand and become Sky Cinema.

A movie premiere will take place every day, starting with the premiere of Spectre.

The on-demand library of movies is also increasing. A new World Cinema strand is being introduced and there will be more pop-up channels for certain themes.

Picture quality has been improved by 33% on the HD movie channels and 4K could possibly be available by the end of the year.

Buy & Keep from next year will offer the Blu-ray as well as the DVD to own.

Ah it's the semi-regular Sky Movies rebrand for no apparent reason!

Personally, I was expecting a return of Sky Cinema 1, Sky Cinema 2, Sky Cinema 3.....

Seeing as the name won't get mentioned in the EPG due to space issues, does it really matter that it's called Movies or Cinema? I wonder if they are keeping the idents, which are lovely and it would be a shame to lose them.

The logo is nice, and is better than the one for Movies with the modified M. All the channel logos are looking more similar which I like.

Wonder if this is to bring the service in line with Europe, as Sky Italia already has Sky Cinema branded channels, though with a different coloured logo.

Mind you they have had Sky Cinema as a name before for a channel or two so its not entirely new.

Cynically I wonder whether such changes are an excuse to quietly close the odd channel and/or increase prices. It'll be interesting to see if they start to move away from lots of linear channels, and focus more on their Sky box sets & on-demand.

The Italian service already has the Twitter and Facebook handles of SkyCinema for themselves. I wonder what SkyUK will end up using. A private account, SkyCinemaUK was created in April.

Sky Movies price went up again at the start of this month by £1 a month, however they changed the system to get them all in HD as part of the Movie pack without the need to pay extra for the HD pack, which now appears to be exclusively for Sky Sports in HD.

I guess that may be why their press release for Sky Cinema can claim it'll be be at no extra cost.

HD as standard! I thought I'd never see the day. Still waiting for it on Sky Sports mind.

I hope the abolishing of the HD fee goes for VM too.

I find it quite strange they're dropping the name considering they've had it for over 25 years. It's like Sky Sports rebranding to Sky Physical Activities. Maybe just associate the name Sky Cinema too much with old black and white films but it doesn't sound very "fresh".

And is it just me or do Sky seem to be rebranding things for the sake of it? The minuscule updates to their channel logos was one of the most mundane "makeovers" I've ever seen.
