Although the loss of Central and to a lesser extent Westcountry was not great
(cheeky bugger)
, Carlton 'star' idents were possibly the finest idents ever produced.
I didn't remember that the swirly colour ones got a bit more inventive towards the end. They were a bit dull at first.
One issue with Carltons logo is that it never looked centred on screen, presumably some sort of optical illusion caused by having a curve on the C and a straight edge on the N?

I'd never consciously noticed that before.
Damn you for mentioning it, as I now find it very noticeable when I watch the idents!
Yeah, that's probably my favourite too out of what was an excellent package of idents all told. Mind you, I wouldn't have minded a westcountry version of Cartlon/Central's 1996 package, as I think that package had a lot of visual creativity about it, but on balance, the 1999 package looked better, sounded better, and was generally a step up even from the 1996 package.

Let's not forget that HTV adopted the same package:

Carlton's 1996 package was awful. I was pleased that they'd changed it by the time they took over Westcountry.
I was always surprised that they never rebranded HTV as Carlton. Presumably there was a reason for that?

By the time that Carlton owned (the broadcasting side of) HTV, we were already well into the dual-branding "hearts" era, and therefore so close in time to when regional on-screen names were likely to be dropped, that HTV would've only been branded as "Carlton" for too short a space of time to really be worth it.
Whether or not that's actually the reason why they didn't rename it, I have no idea.
Weren't the midlands and southwest only branded as "Carlton" for about 3 years or so anyway? So, imagine how short-lived it would've been in HTV-land, before the grinning ITV1 celebrities arrived.
Well into the "Carlton" era (I lived in the midlands at the time), I still heard people say things like "Did you see that programme on
Central
last night?" or whatever. I would gladly sign the death warrant of such people.
