TCC also had one of the "turn over to news channel" messages. This is not how you do it however. Its way too big to notice. EDIT: Also, why would a child care about someone's death?

I presume ITN fed the strap out on the 'news standby' feed, and whoever the ITV company was that was playing out to network the programme it was inserted over, simply keyed the strap onto the 'Tx to Network' output ?
Which given it was a saturday night would almost always have been LWT, anyway?
Although it tended to be during Family Fortunes from what I recall, which was a Central show.
I'm sure Family Fortunes used to be on Fridays at 7pm. Now there's something you don't see these days...non celeb, ATV/Central made Family Fortunes.

Curious.
Why would TCC tell any passing child to go over to the BBC for 'breaking news'?
I would have thought that pointing them to Sky News would have been more logical, as they are on the same satellite/cable system. Or even, not worrying them, and making no reference to it at all.

TCC would have been owned by Flextech at that point of time who was linked the BBC.

Here's an example - 55 seconds in.

I remember back in the late 90s itv would put up a strap, I think ITN branded, with the lottery numbers. Wonder how that got to air?

Interestingly it's pretty much identical in size to this strap which was used during a News Flash.
I know the above example is overlaid on an actual report, but it makes you wonder if there was a configuration set up that allowed ITN to put a strap over programming in the event of breaking news (possibly overlaid at BT Tower? - just a thought)
Wasn't LNN playing out the network feed by the time the Lottery started anyway?

No idea about TCC but the policy of who to point to in such a circumstance depended on the channel. I've mentioned before that the policy for the 'Sky Multichannels' was to point viewers to Sky News, though I'm pretty sure that UK Gold was an exception as it was part BBC owned. Cartoon Network/TNT (which weren't part of Multichannels) sent viewers to CNN.
The message on TCC would have been for the parents of course, though it's a bit of a risk if it was something more violent than a royal death.

UKTV was a while away from being created then and I'm pretty sure it's sister channels captioned Sky News (I worked at one for a bit and read the obit procedure!)
EDIT - In fact it seems this had changed by the time of Diana's death, see my post on the next page
Of course at the time TCC's rival Nickelodeon carried a daily strand of CBBC branded programmes - they were the channel linked to the BBC, not TCC

It ran in the Les Dennis era certainly Fridays at 7pm but the original Bob Monkhouse run started, apparently, January 6th 1980 which was a Sunday, and it was later wiped (Lostshows saying it only survives on a domestic format - possibly the Monkhouse archive).
Bygraves episodes apparently went out on Saturdays for his first series and it wasn't until 1985 and Bygraves's last series it settled in its Friday night slot.

Thanks for the information. Thought I was right about the Les Dennis era (which is all I remember really of the non-Celebrity version...).

The UKTV deal was signed months before Diana's death and the UKTV network launched a month or so afterwards.
