Like I say, BBC One could get away with using just 1 if they wanted, but '1' on it's own is not strong enough for Sky 1, but I'm not saying they cannot use it or they won't.

If I was running Sky1, I'd want the 'Sky' to be as much as part of the brand as the 1. The 'Sky', as much, if not more important here.

I'm not sure you're right. Sky are also using the standardised channel logo in promos, which is corporate. The '1' also uses their own font, so is unique in that respect.

It's certainly a bold move to concentrate on the '1' for the idents, as they'll need to develop more of them to enhance the idea of a character.

Fortunately, for Sky, they have deep pockets and this is an ident which can be used across their whole group .

And that's probably my main point, outside of the 'Sky group', it means nothing.

You're right in the fact that the '1' is in their own font, but it still doesn't look anywhere near unique enough, for me anyway.

For me, it works for C4 and BBC TWO, because they are widely known as 2 and 4. Sky 1 is only known as Sky1 and not 1.

Agreed, but C4 and BBC Two are both FTA, and therefore far wider known.

Although Sky1 is a subscription channel, it's very high on their EPG, and known to people who are paying for it.

I think it all depends on how well they develop the character of the '1'.

Guess they could have branded themselves as sky6, like fox8 does in Australia on cable and satellite. Then 6 would mean the sky channel - if you know what I'm getting at!

Except Sky Uno is 105 in Italy, but 106 in the UK/Ireland and they don't yet have the equivalent in Germany/Austria.

I think they are looking to use the numeral to represent their 'mainstream entertainment channel', regardless of where it sits on the EPG.

Many Oz channels names (7, 9 & 10) hark back to their old analogue frequencies, and look quite odd on their EPGs.

Are we forgetting there are two terrestrial channels that currently use idents that use no logo whatsoever?

C4 & C5 don't use their logos in idents, but they use their logos in promos.

Channel 4 doesn't.

I'm sure they use the new 'flat' 2D logo in cross-channel promos, but I could have dreamt that. Laughing

They have been variations of Sky One/1 for over twenty years, the brand's well known. Sky6 would only have meaning on Sky digital - they have various different EPG numbers on cable.

With 2D and print, you need a logo that is vectorised and able to be resized as needed. The 3D logo would need to be re-rendered for different sizes, and it no doubt has post production work done to it also.

A fair point, I didn't think of it that way. I can see why it is important to have a vectorised logo nowadays for mobile apps ect. and have found there are limitations to vector logos (amount of detail). Currently there is no reason why the 3D version can't be used on the Sky1 website as the logo is a PNG file not a Vector file. For example the Sky Movies website has been using the new 3D style of logo for some time.

Also quite important for your print logo to look acceptable in black and white for when things get photocopied or faxed. Or so you can put a single colour version over an image.

I would think even the 2D logo would be too detailed for sending via fax in black and white, I am sure they would use a similar logo to that of the channel DOG.

A logo is not a single image. It is a collection of representation marks, designed to work in various situations. So there will be Black & White (or Single Color version) a Full colour version (in the case of sky channels, a version for Light backgrounds, and a version for dark backgrounds) as well as any 3D representations within idents and branding sequences/video.
