I notice the press release doesn't actually refer to 'phone a friend' it simply says 'ask a friend'.

I believe the 'phone a friend' lifeline in America became the '+1' where the friend they bring in the audience is brought down to help with the question. So maybe they are going down that route.

The contestant call refers to 'Fastest Finger' so hopefully they are bringing that back to choose the contestant rather than pre-selecting as they did for the later shows in the original run.

The problem with the revised series started around the time of the new money tree, everyone got to £20,000 and then the question to get to the £50,000 milestone was so obviously made much harder due to a more restricted budget by then, so most contestants were off at that point. As mentioned the auditioned contestants was a problem too, as it pretty much eliminated the quizzers from getting on as those would be far too big a risk for ITV by that point.

The questions beyond £50,000 were made much harder too - no-one, civilian or celeb, won more than £150,000.

Unless I'm mistaken, they alternated between auditions and the traditional hotline (double-four, double-four, double-four) from the introduction of the 12-question ladder in 2007 until the introduction of the clock in 2010, at which point it became auditions only - which David Edwards, the second millionaire, believes was a big mistake:

Any news on where it will be filmed?

Manchester according to the press release.

Clarkson doesn’t get anywhere near enough praise for how slick and competent a presenter he is. He’s a great choice for this.

Funnily enough his last 'game show' presenting role if you exclude things like HIGNFY was Robot Wars...in 1998!

And people only remember Craig Charles as the presenter of it!

Someone once told me, and it would make sense if it's true, that Celador insisted of ITV and BBC that Millionaire and Winning Lines were forbidden from clashing with each other on a Saturday night. Anyone know if it's true.

Unlikely. Its probably more of a case of ITV and BBC not wanting to schedule competing quiz shows in Saturday night prime time.
Winning Lines would have got priority though, as that was a lottery draw wraparound, so had to air after the 7.30pm lottery sale closure.

It would be very easy for the phone a friend to Google an answer within 30 seconds these days, a lot harder (albeit not impossible) 20 years ago!

Wasn't there a situation where a "friend" was in an assigned location rather than sitting at home? Or have I just imagined that happened?

I think so, at least in the later series.

Manchester according to Bothers Bar, so probably Media City. Surprising giving Clarkson’s previous comments about the BBC relocating so much to Salford, but this is something that’s new for him so it’s not really the same.

Gold are currently showing the episode of The Royle Family where Jim, Denise and Dave watch and play along with an episode of Millionaire. It got me wondering if it was a real episode that was used or it was specially recorded so that the script could work around it.
